I see some Speedos and tachs have chrome bezels and some have black. Any differences or were they different between models. | ||

For 96 and 97 S1, 97 S3 and 97 M2 had chrome bezel clocks. From 98 on they had black bezel clocks. | ||

MY 96 S1 came with the "wrinkled black" gauge housings on it. I switched those, to be also chrome...... I am an "old school" Guy.....CANNOT get enough chrome on a bike!! I also switched out a few other engine covers along the way. Rocker covers, Derby cover......anything compatible with the Sportster bike, that was easy to replace. | ||

I'd love to get one of those newer tachometers that shows the engine speed in single digits x1000. This bike is the only vehicle I've ever owned that puts the engine speed at double digits x100, and even after years of riding it almost daily, I still constantly look at the tachometer when I want to see how fast I'm going. All of the newer tachs have the black ring, and mine have the chrome ring so they wouldn't match and I don't to swap my speedo since it has the original odometer in it. | ||

My current '02 M2 came with chrome bezels on the speedo and tach. My previous '02 M2 came with black bezels. I think the chrome was optional, at least in 2002. | ||

I should specify I don't know what all of the later FI bikes had. I've just looked specifically at some of the tachs off of later carbed bikes before they started building the idiot lights into them. Might've just been a select few bikes that had the black ones. | ||

My 01M2 came with chrome. I took them off . There only held on with 3 small pieces of double sided tape | ||

you mean they're all black, and certain ones just have chrome trim held on with double sided tape? | ||

After Buell went to all black bezels, there were accessory parts to add chrome bezels that did tape on. Original silver bezels are stainless steel, not chrome. | ||

So I gave in and just bought one of the newer style tachs with the single digits and black bezel. $34 shipped for a brand new one on ebay. Looks like the guy might have a bunch of them and just keeps listing them. I'll deal with the color difference later, maybe some black vinyl on the speedo bezel, or some brushed aluminum looking vinyl on both to match. Good time to clean up the aluminum dash plate too, looking a little rough. |
