If opinions count for anything, If there is not a statute saying some part of open carry is illegal, then open carry is not illegal.
In a court of law they do not. I pass through three counties on the way to work. A couple of them have a much larger law enforcement presence than their respective populations merit. I'm not going to bother looking into open carry laws as it pertains to each one. To each their own.
State law states very specific circumstances for open carry. General open carry is not a thing. Popular opinion means nothing in the context of written law and statutes when challenged.
And it depends on the state. For example, here in Maryland, ONCE you get your permit to carry, you may choose to carry open, or concealed. Maryland does not distinguish - carry is carry. Getting the permit in the first place is the challenge.
Other states are different.
Know your laws, and make sure you follow them to the letter.
Something to ponder: If your State offers a lifetime permit, get it. There is a person that failed to renew their permit on time and was put in jail for illegal carry. And this was in a very friendly carry state.
in GA open carry is only allowed with a CCW permit
Georgia just has a Weapons Carry Permit, and you choose whether you open or concealed carry. Same permit goes for fixed blade knives of 5 inches or greater.
Try crossing into Canada with a suit of 14th century Armor!
Oh, it's not illegal. But it's expensive! Customs completely understands expensive. Then they want a deposit against the taxes for it's sale.
A legitimate concern. But it's custom built for me, and I'm keeping it.
I've done a lot of events in Ontario, and the technique evolved to packing the armor with the shiny metal parts on the bottom of a Hockey bag. Helmet in a cloth bag. Pile the pads, on top, zip it up, and top off with beat up hockey gloves.
I carry the gloves as back up for when a gauntlet gets damaged, and since I drive a van or minivan Customs just shines a light over the back area. ( no obvious trunk )
That works pretty good. I did spend an hour once pulling out my pavilion/tent. The canvas and spoke poles live in breathable burlap sacks, a 4x1' and 5x5' that could hide refugees. That turned into a tent demonstration, taking up 5 lanes in the holding area. Good time had by all.

True, and silly. Big knives requiring a permit is dumb.
Also true, and silly. Guns requiring a permit is dumb.
That is also correct. "Constitutional carry" should be the law of the land. Screw your sensitive sensibilities.
Someone asked how to tell the good guys with guns with the bad guys with guns. Usually, the latter will have their firearm pointed at you with bad intent. That's a good hint.
I agree wholeheartedly that Constitutional Carry should be the law of the land. It IS in the Constitution, after all...and I'm willing to bet just about ANYTHING that I have, that CC would bring back...what're they called....MANNERS.
There are certainly those among legal gun owners that are more tactful and responsible than others.
These days there's a culture with an entitled attitude, poor manners, and no patience. They're the kind of people I don't mind getting upset over not getting their way.
I forgot to mention that I fired a couple more guns that I've never tried out...a Chinese SKS and a Browning Buckmark. The SKS hit where it was aimed and functioned flawlessly. It has the typical over gassed feel prevalent in Russian small arms. The Buckmark is just a fine target 22 out of the box. No complaints there.
Recently I had a coworker extolling the deadly virtues of 22LR (it "bounces around" inside the body causing massive trauma ), telling people that anyone could open carry without a permit, and of modern 9mm being on parity with all other service cartridges due to modern bullet technology (although minor, there is a difference, and there's always compromises). Spreading that kind of ignorance is unprofessional at best, and dangerous at worst. Of course I was the jerk for pointing out that he was factually wrong on all points.
In 22lr, even the most powerful loads can't meet minimum penetration standards out of pistols, a permit is needed to open carry in this state, and 9mm has become the standard (again) because it is less expensive to supply and easier to train people on. Bonded hollowpoints and modern technology has made expanding ammunition more consistent and reliable in penetration depth and expansion, but the mechanics are still the same. You can't beat simple physics. That would be some real kinda magic.
But but...to the ignorant and terrified, guns ARE magic.
Don't you watch CNN? They're pure black-magic, evil incarnate. Autonomous, killers, zero conscience and no control whatsoever. And don't forget scary looking.
I guess my guns are just lazy...they haven't killed anyone yet. I don't think. I do have dad's old .38 that saw four campaigns in Korea, so I'm not sure about that old soldier...but for now he seems pretty content to be hanging, clean and shiny, in the gun safe. The .38, that is, not dad. Dad's in a columbarium in Florida, also happy and content (and I'm sure looking down and making certain I don't do anything stupid with his pistol).
Us good guys keep 'em concealed, until absolutely necessary.
In other words - you won't know a good guy even HAS a gun, until they (and you) need it.
There are a lot of tells that let the cat out of the bag if you look for them. I'm sure a good LEO can tell when I'm concealing my AR or the Super Redhawk. You want to be outed, try and conceal carry around a bunch of gang bangers. We wish we were invisible, but don't fool yourself. Situational awareness is your #1 tool. For a simple exercise; Start trying to find the gun. Watch people touch it, 1st tell with newbies. Then clothing adjustments or clothing for conceal carry. Look for duty clothing. Look for the guy that is looking for a threat. To advance to the next level of finding the gun; Watch detectives and how they favor certain movements. Watch how Vladimir Putin walks and holds his arms in different positions. I would prefer to just open carry my AR. I'm not fooling anyone that matters. It would be easier to say, "molon labe". And stay vigilant. Sure my 1911 hides well, but what about these 5 magazines? Just like my AR hides well, but that pack with 14 magazines? The magazine pockets on my pants stick out like a sore thumb when loaded. If everyone open carried we would have an openly polite society.
So, R.D., How has open carry ever helped you? First, yes, it has helped me. Here is a safe for public forum tale. A person sitting beside me in the corner of a parking lot got in a tiff with his girl friend. I did not know about it. Her 350 pound brother came to sort this feller out with a tire iron. I switched to open carry from concealed carry with out removing the pistol from it's holster. The brother went and called the police instead of beating the guy with his tire iron. The responding LEO asked for my ID and permit. I handed them to him, letting him know that at no time did my weapon come out of the holster or off of safe, even though I was in fear for my life. After everything was sorted out, I informed the officer that for future reference the property we were standing on was mine and I do not need a permit to carry anything on it. I requested that the brother be told that and that if he stepped on to the property in the future it would be trespassing. I like watching a good fight as much as the next guy, but 350 pounds and a tire iron is not a good fight. And yes, the scrawny feller was back at the 300 pound sister's place that night consummating their whatever.

Rick:
Are you familiar with Paul Harrell's YouTube channel? Your experience with your coworker telling stories reminds me of Harrell. He's got some great videos that address many of those kinds of stories; some are absolutely hilarious.

He comes up as a suggestion all the time. Thus far I've only watched a video on the viability of black powder revolvers for self defense. He seems like a guy with his head screwed on straight...this guy, though...
Behold the "Blooming Death," not to be confused with the "Death Blossom" from that 1980's sci fi movie.
Sonny became infamous after shooting a fellow instructor in a shoot house by coming in blazing in the dark without any illumination. Always know your target and what is beyond it. A pretty basic rule to break...but so is aiming 360 degrees on a range setting. The drill is puzzling, to say the least...regardless of the circumstances.

And all was well with the world.
After a lifetime of waifish women I'm with the voluptuous sort. I can't say I'd complain...though she weighs about a person less than the above example
