I decided to keep digging into this bike. Determined the fan is pretty much worm out. All codes are gone and it is idling hard now 1k, but it's a start. |

If you know cooling fan part number for your motorcycle google it and you will have a bunch of dealers offering it. Thanks so much. This information is exactly what I was looking for. I replaced the blown fuse this weekend and all the error codes went away. The fan isn't running, and it looks pretty beat. I ordered the SPAL aftermarket unit and plan to replace it. Also, there was a negative ground I found from the wires rubbing underneath the airbox. Here is my theory. The HD dealer I took it to, prior to driving out here filled the oil a hair high. Somehow some oil leaked out of the breather and onto the already tired fan when I was driving across Nebraska this summer. (It was hot) The fan died and caused the code. #winning. |

Study Xbimmer's instructions and photos well before starting the repair. Also, warming the fans in the sun will make it easier to separate them from the brackets. While the fan is out; then would be a good time to replace the O2 sensor. |

While the fan is out; then would be a good time to replace the O2 sensor. Good advise since you have to take out the fan to get to the O2 sensor. |

The fan might be similar, without measurements there's really no way to tell. The shroud is definitely different. |

The fan in the St Paul link looks similar to the SPAL fan in the xBimmer link. It might work, but some modification and assembly will be needed.... (Message edited by teeps on November 08, 2019) |

The SPAL fan sold for ATVs is the same motor and blade, with different shroud. I've modified the existing BUELL shroud to more easily accept the swapped motor and blade from the ATV units. Just notch the ring the motor sits in on all three sides and it's not too bad to get mounted in the shroud. The power connector needs to also be changed to match the Buell part. |

I just went through the fan swap. I noticed a while back that the fan in my '08 wasn't running when I slowed down (the only time I can hear it). I was wondering if perhaps the ECU or tune had glitched. Then I started getting intermittent MIL's, and ECMDroid reported a code for 'Fan short to ground.' I looked around, and it seems that no one has the original fan in stock, so I did the swap described in the link above. I ordered the fan from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009OBP182/ref=p px_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. I cut the original mount and carefully removed the fan. I did the same thing to the new fan and mount, and then installed the new unit in the original mount. Pretty easy. Note where the power cable is secured to the original mount, and put the new cable there. I used as much of both cables as possible when I spliced them together - the OEM cable is too short, IMHO. My bike has the fan exhaust shroud, or whatever it's called. It is cracked roughly in half, which made it a bit less of a PITA to remove and replace. Otherwise, the process is fairly straightforward. As others have noted, mine was a bit of a mess behind the motor/in front of the fan. The cleanup took a bit of effort - the fan date code was 2008, and the bike has 68K on it - so the crud has been collecting for a good while. |
