I had a single caliber duo for a while. Yes, in the 80s. Even used the same magazines in the pistol and carbine. .45 ACP, Colt Officers Lightweight and a scoped Marlin Camp 45. Both were tack drivers. I seam to regret selling stuff after the fact.

All the Redhawks I have got to shoot were great shooters. I had a pistol scope on the Super Redhawk. .454 broke the optics. I should think about scoping it again. I won't need a carbine to go with it.

Yes, the causes for everyone's problems:

"Climate change"
Trump
The "rich"
"Cisgender" white males,A.K.A. "the patriarchy"
White people
The police
The Constitution as written
Guns
Christianity
Educated blacks
The legal immigration system
The "far right" A.K.A. "Nazis," I.E. anyone that disagrees with all of the above as the world's problems.

Did I miss any?

I fired quick fifty shot failure to stop drills (a 33rd and 17rd mag) out of the Glock yesterday. I had one miss (head shot), and one out of the highest scoring zone (also a head shot). Also, re holstering the gun resulted in discomfort!

At the range Saturday with Michele and our friends Keith (remember Dark Horse Moto) and Stacy.

Heard this awesome sound, next range over to our left.

M37, an M1919 variant .30-06 Machine Gun. Had reportedly never seen service.

"Would you like to shoot it?" the man asks.

An absolutely devastating weapon. Very easy to control. The 1" thick 16" round steel plate at 200 yards was dancing like it was 1999.

There went $50 of Ammo. I was afraid to ask how much he paid for the gun. Guessing $50,000 to $100,000. He said it took a year to receive his tax stamp for it. Here's the owner's friend getting it warmed up:

Very cool. One came through the shop here recently.

I'm liking something a bit older school lately. It would satisfy my yearning for a black powder carbine and pistol alike.

So it was about selling complete rifles illegally...and he's let off because it'll lead to wider knowledge of 80% lowers? That smells a bit funky to me.

I know the ATF was trying hard to discourage "build parties" years ago...where groups of people would pay to use someone's facility or equipment to complete their 80% lower.

In the end they should go after the criminals. Knowingly assisting prohibited persons to make firearms or making a firearm as a prohibited person should probably be discouraged. Everything else is nonsense.

The ATF's argument is that a person or company that assists in the making of firearms as a business model could be considered a manufacturer...and they want regulate such businesses.

The story was poor. It really had no detail on selling complete guns unless you call letting your mill be used to finish 80% lowers "selling a gun."

My take is they don't want a court case that shows that the existing rules are schizophrenic, or maybe hiding that guns don't have to be made by magik spells in a Federally approved giant arsenal complex?

I haven't read the court paperwork obviously.

He would "rent out" his machine shop for people to do 80% and it cost $1000???

WHAT.

This story is very poorly written or something.
None of that makes any sense to me.
Not when a jig and harborfreight drill press cost FAR less.

Was he helping them? Was he training them?

Where does $1000 go towards getting a lower?

Anderson lowers with blemishes are how much these days?

I am "guessing" that a thou. would get all the parts, an 80% lower, instruction, and time of the machines. Did the Feds return everything they confiscated from him?

As a break from the lies of media & would be dictators that threaten to nuke you if you won't surrender your property.... ( the idea that an American Politician would be so stupid as to insinuate that he'd order the mass murder of a City or City sized area to eliminate a Citizen who refused to Obey him with a real Weapon of Mass Destruction, is incredible. But true. )

Re-issue of the classic Colt M-16 scope.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B5p1kkHujp8

It's a Golden Age of fire arms. ( and car & bike & home entertainment )

It's very rare to be aware that you live in a Golden Age.

Yes, I can't order a surplus Luger for $50, mail order, today. But I wasn't old enough to do so when you could. By the time I was 18, those bargains were long gone. ( like a '98 Mauser today. Should have bought one 15 years ago ) And, mail order vanished with the 1938 Nazi gun control laws..ooops! I mean the 1968 rewrite of the 1938 Nazi laws.

But all the money in the world in 1967 couldn't buy you a gun as accurate as the bargain bin Ruger American or Savage 110 variant, which are often bundled with the cheapest of scopes for a fraction of a week's pay.

And that cheap scope today has better optics, coatings, water tightness, repeatability, etc. Than a scope that was three months salary in 1967.

In fact, the finest Nikon or German scope of the 1980s can't compete with the bottom line scope from Leupold or Trijicon, or...( Made in America, lifetime warranty ) And NASA couldn't make a scope as good as the high end offerings.

Yeah, you can get a really Chinese Barska that equates to a 1970s scope, ( but still is better than anything you could afford in 1967 ) in optical quality, but it costs the same as a dinner and movie for 2. ( Red Robin & Avengers for 3 was more! )

And unless you live where I do, or other doomed States ; ) your options for modern defensive and sporting arms are incredible.

Consider the nifty collections some here have shown. Impossible variety a few years ago ( And maybe a few years from now! )

Enjoy! Invest! And he sure to wear a life vest in small boats.

Large gun collections plus tiny vessels equals disaster, folks

My commercial Belarusian clone of a Russian Dragunov combat optic has an optical quality that reminds me of those cheap chain store scopes. It is, however, built tough as nails, has illumination, and the coolest reticle known to man. The lack of proper BDC knob is disturbing, however.

I had a Chinese clone of the Colt (Hakko Japan) 4x optic. It had thin wire crosshairs, a yellow hue to the image, but worked well enough. I later overcompensated with an 8-40x Tasco (also made by Hakko, coincidentally) which I later sold for a profit (precision air gunners had a thing for that particular model). My current optic on that gun is a 1-4x (actual 1.5-4.5x) Leupold with a 300-600 yard BDC knob and a German #1 reticle as custom features...so basically a higher quality and more versatile version of what I started out with, with a reticle that allows for shooting in very low light/at speed while still having a well defined tip (just the tip) for precision use.

It was interesting to see how well those guys did in a match environment with that old style Colt repro optic.

As an aside, I busted out my 10.5" 5.56 home D gun in the hopes that SS109 at a lower velocity would be less punishing to my rifle plate. That did not turn out to be the case. It also hit a little left...I'm not sure it was from using different ammo (it was sighted in with 69 OTM ammunition), the fact that the optic has come on and off a half dozen times since then, or because it's fallen over a couple times from its normal corner. Probably a combination, I suppose. I also took out my 15-22 which has a new optic and rear sight. They're both hitting low...but I didn't feel like fiddling with it just then. The rear sight (a Ruger flip up) has an annoyingly small aperture. It works well enough...just not in low light.

I had a Barska with a German #1 reticle with illuminated dot. Cheap. But what you'd expect from a bubble pack bargain scope, ok light transmission, but a tiny eye box.

As a means to try a reticle out, it was fine. It went away with the gun. I liked the German #1, a good choice for low light.

My next rifle will have a better scope. I'm not sure which reticle. I prefer my BDC as a tree to look through instead of a knob to turn. I like my turrets capped and safe from change.

I've done the $1000 gun with $200 scope.

Next it might be the $800 scope on a $200 gun.

I'm casually looking at single shot rifles, just for paper punching. Preferably in 5.56 NATO ( or Wylde chamber ) for ammo cost. But if I find a nice Ruger #1 in a not exotic caliber...

I keep finding them in oddball chamberings like .270 Weatherby, .458 Winchester Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, & .17 Remington. And they are usually sold in a few weeks.

I know there are thousands of break action .223 rifles out there.

NEF/H&R used to sell one called "handi-rifle" or something cringy like that.

I was all geared up to get one until I read a comparison that showed that it was ALMOST as accurate as an AR15.

Any recommendations for a low-priced scope that can withstand .45-70 Henry? (Asking for a friend...)

Yeah, the handi-rifle. Since an AR is a no go in The Imperial State, and all I need is a low cost plinker.

As to scopes? Check out Midway USA, & Brownells for prices. If you sort by reviews, then by price, that's a good start.

Even better, go to local small gun shops. They seem to always have used scopes for reasonable prices ( but check against the sites above to verify that it's actually a good deal )

Since their used scopes are mostly removed from guns they take in trade, and not taken in trade directly, they can usually be haggled over, since their sale is gravy & less "gotta make a profit to stay in business" items.

A Henry .45-70 kicks big, but not sharp. So any decent quality scope should take it. Do not skimp on the rings.

Oddly, the hardest guns on scopes seem to be piston air rifles, because of the reverse kick they have.

I'd look for a shotgun scope. They tend to be simple, rugged, and have ample eye relief.

I came across this today. It doesn't appear the guy has some beyond "normal" believes, but has not done NOTHING criminal. I truly believe even if we so not agree with someone's views they still have the 1st and 2nd amendment rights....even if we don't like their views.

We really are on a very slippery slope right now.

Rifle scopes.
It's hard to go wrong with Vortex.
They have a large variety ranging from $200 to $3,500.

All have an Unlimited, Unconditional Lifetime warranty.

https://vortexoptics.com/riflescopes.html

Most sporting goods stores sell them well under MSRP.

They don't like his views. They then take his weapons. Only then do they start to grapple with what laws they can apply to use against him. And I'm sure these folks have zero understanding of the tyranny that they are involved in. Who is the greater threat?

So, a friend sent me a message earlier today that the Gander in Chambersburg PA is closing. 25-70% off.

FIELD TRIP.

So, I can't buy a handgun in PA because I live in MD. Despite being licensed in both states...I just can't. Maryland.

They were already sold out of safes. And 9mm. I picked up a handful of 70%-off base layer shirts ($50 marked down to $12) just to have for winter. Got three transport boxes with cubed foam inside...because $4.27 each. Handguns, microphones, anything...$4.27 each. I got a power/network/USB passthrough kit for my Liberty safe, as well as an LED light kit - $10 and $8. They were out of dehumidifiers though.

My friend Karen got a few boxes as well, some clothing...

And I figured since I couldn't get a handgun because of the state line...I went ahead and picked up a new Mossberg 500 Tactical 12ga for the house, with six boxes of shells (3 turkey shot, 3 rifled slug).

My whole cart cost less than the original price of the Mossberg.

Sucks that yet another store is closing shop...but I did score some nice deals at least.

I had a situation at a nearby Walmart. Forced to use the public restroom after an all you can eat salad bar buffet, I ended up having my 1911 fall out of my holster in the stall. It made a distinctive clunk as it hit the ground. I expected officers escorting me out and a lifetime ban...but nobody cared, apparently. That holster is a high rise and the pants flimsy, so it cartwheeled readily despite a sturdy belt. I'm wearing it more often to practice for such contingencies. The gun has been ran over and had fallen out of a carry sleeve before...so no harm done. It's my full sized 1911 with an extra powered firing pin spring and a titanium firing pin so it's as drop safe as can be without a firing pin safety. It was cocked and locked...falling on a half cocked hammer would probably not be the best scenario. That poor gun is so beat up...that's what it gets hanging out with the likes of me.
