I went down hard yesterday. In the trauma ward of St Mary's hospital in West Palm Beach. 8 broken ribs, some in multiple pieces, three broken bones in the right shoulder, staples in the back of my head, and a few more skinless patches. Surgeries upcoming. Getting by on IV Dilaudid for now. |

Man, that sucks. Sounds like you have a long recovery period coming. Best wishes. What exactly happened out there? Were you riding lid-less in Florida? |

Hi guys. Had surgery Wednesday to repair 8 seriously smashed ribs on the back of my spine. The surgeon was the guy who developed the procedure, but he got careless this time and started working on the wrong side, so I'm dealing with not only the pain of a broken scapula, a broken collarbone, another bone in my shoulder, 8 broken ribs that have been patched together, the incision to repair the ribs, but also the pain and aggravation of an unnecessary cut on the wrong side... Won't be leaving this facility until my pain level drops enough to get by on my regular pain meds, and I start having regular BMs. Most likely headed for a physical therapy facility after this. |

Good lord. Even surgeons are becoming inept these days? How the f do you start cutting on someone without making damn sure your are doing on the correct area? Sorry man. That sucks. |

Thanks for the prayers and well wishes, much appreciated. The last chest drain tube was pulled late this afternoon, and I'm sort of getting by on oral meds and a patch. Tomorrow I move to Rehab. The lady I talked to today said people with similar injuries usually spend a week to ten days there. Hopefully the remaining broken ribs and the shoulder bones will have knit and started to heal. The rib plating procedure I had done has helped overall. |

More well wishes, this time from Portland. Good luck with the healing, busted ribs are a bear to deal with. Were you on your Buell when this happened? Amongst the the surgeries, hospital, and pills, has someone been able to help you with the bike? Your contributions to this forum have been really appreciated, I understand this can takes the wind out of your sails, but I hope your can still participate. Keep us updated. Thanks Duane. This happened on a bicycle. I had an accident two years ago on an unregistered and uninsured 1125R on private roads. My health insurance company gave me so much grief trying to hang at least some financial responsibility on my bike insurance company that I swore I would never let the same situation happen again. All 5 of my Buells are tucked securely away. I'll be sticking around, even though I won't be riding or working on them for a while. (Message edited by Panshovevo on July 07, 2019) |

Damn John... on a peddle your arse.. pleased to hear of your progress and impending move to a rehab... will keep you in my prayers, ya never know...... Went down on my left shoulder a couple weeks ago doing a septic inspection, the guy's dog bit my right leg near the ankle ( shep/lab mix with an attitude ) and I fell and re-injured my shoulder.. was off the bike for two weeks again which sucked but... it's over and up on two again.. Love yer attitude, it's a Buell Thang! Pete |

Did three hours of OT and PT this morning. The PT evaluator told me I should be finished here by Friday. Meds were cut significantly yesterday, but the situation improved today. There were a couple of nurses in the trauma ward that I absolutely despised. They took every opportunity to micromanage my pain meds, and I suffered for it. The rehab nurses I have dealt with so far are much more interested in seeing patients comfortable. |

"Love yer attitude, it's a Buell Thang! Pete" The wife was here yesterday to say goodbye, as she's taking the 7 yr old and 11 yr old on a Disney cruise this week. At one point, she said she was sorry she ever encouraged me to get a Buell. I immediately responded " I'm not! " (Message edited by Panshovevo on July 07, 2019) |

Looks like they are going to cut me loose on Thursday. Not a moment too soon! I'll probably need some therapy after the shoulder heals completely, but that's a ways down the road. |

Still making physical progress, although it seems slower now. The wife blamed ALL (two) of my bike accidents on my Buells, and asked me to stop riding them. I said no, and it’s a damn good thing I did. Turns out the bikes were an excuse for untoward behavior on her part... Where this will lead, I can’t begin to guess, but my Buells will be with me, even though it’s likely she won’t. 27 years down the tubes...and many of them weren’t very good years. Some were downright bad. |

I rode yesterday. Took my big inch Dyna, my 76 shovelhead, and my S3-T out for a little exercise. I managed to drop the damn shovel head on the slight slope out the back door of the hangar, but was able to pick it up by myself without doing any major damage to myself or the bike. |

Wow John. You are trooper for sure. I LOVE riding about as much as anything in life, but I don't know if I would still be riding if I had your experiences. Major props! |

Harlan, riding has been such a big part of my life for the last 50 years or so, that if I quit, I think I’d just wither up and die. |

I can’t help wondering who makes up these seemingly random numbers hospitals and health care professionals bill our insurance companies? Just the three largest numbers on my latest statement total over half a mil! And there are dozens of other charges ranging from $50 to $6600, with more on the higher side than the lower... Sometimes the insurance company pays 75%, sometimes 10%...I can make no sense of it. |

That is called capitalism, better than socialism apparently, but in both systems the "have's" end up rich and privileged. |

The hospitals charge whatever they want. Even more so when they are billing insurance. Is there any surprise our insurance premiums are ridiculous? |

OUCH! I’m sure the rib plating surgery saved me a lot of pain...at least that’s what they tell me. It would appear the nerves that were fried as part of the procedure are growing back, and they are NOT happy! Dayum! (Of course I aggravated everything Sunday, bringing the X1W home, and loading it on the lift table...I forgot to put the side stand up, it caught at the top of the ramp, and I had to practically lift the ass end of the bike up to get it clear!) |
