Doc has me on a low carb diet, so I've laid off for a few weeks & yeah, got some gout going. I'm budgeting the cherry juice in now & between it & Advil, getting better. Alas, the dried fruit is nigh forbidden. Won't bore you more with the organ recital. ( at a certain age medical stories substitute for weather as initial subject )
Here's an evil tip. If your friends leave you alone for a minute with Siri, Alexa, or just a tablet in earshot, just repeat "Smith & Wesson, Remington, Winchester, Ruger, etc." Any gun words you can think of. Don't call for the devices attention, that's not necessary. It's listening. They will soon find the Masters of the Universe are feeding them gun related ads. Lots of them.
Or you could do motorcycle words, or cooking, nearly anything.
How do I know?
Spent a few days in the hospital. Had my Kindle with me to surf & read. At no time in the last YEAR or more have I searched for my condition. ( what it is is not relevant ) Not one time while in the hospital, either. Not on phone, tablet, or home PC. Not once. It's possible I looked it up in 2003, once, but never ever for over a decade.
And...all of a sudden 2 out of 3 ads are " secrets Big Pharma don't want you to know " & "This secret ingredient cures xxx" with cinnamon, turmeric, beet root, and, of course, vinegar ( but only the expensive kind with the must ) etc. On high rotation, constant bombardment.
It heard the word xxx repeatedly and knows where I am, even with gps & all apps denied access to position turned off.
Since privacy is a false illusion, use it for humor and harassment.
I wonder what just repeating "God bless you" would do to someone's propaganda feed?
I decided to go a few days without Ibuprofen myself. Makes me feel old(er) and worn out I only take 400mg a day, but I do get grumpy without it.
What's a good substitute for that?
I do have a bad habit of going along with kid things, and having more fun than the kids...such as the waterpark this weekend. There does seem to be a point where being spun in circles on giant slides at a high rate of speed gets less enjoyable. It was overcast and raining lightly...we had the place to ourselves.
On the guns, they're always gonna be banning something...sounds like a Michael Jackson song.
I look forward to my sales being over, buying a different firearm or two, and finally making my PSL what I want of it.
I found a company making a wood SVD-S style grip. Is nice...if they ever become available. If not I'll be whittling my own.
Should have known I'd jinx myself with all the gout bragging. Had a big flair up and went in for testing today after spending a night without sleep. Makes you want to cry. I had been having good luck with the cherries.
On the guns, they're always gonna be banning something...sounds like a Michael Jackson song.
More than three of the Presidential Candidates have vowed to illegally use imaginary dictatorial powers to cancel the second amendment and confiscate assault weapons, a made up term for anything they want it to mean.
At least two have admitted they plan to ban all private ownership of guns by Executive Power or legislation. The details of this theft vary and are in no way legal or Constitutional. But since pretty much all multi dozen of them pretended to support the Green Leap Forward, then refused to vote for or against it, not wanting to admit to taking away folk's cars in an election year, it's pretty obvious truth and law mean nothing to everyone running.
End rant.
As to Advil. There are other non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs available. All, including Advil ( or It's generic versions ) have long term liver damage potential.
For chronic pain, that you take daily OTC drugs like Advil to control, Naproxen ( Aleve ) works for some. https://www.drugs.com/naproxen.html
There are prescription only choices.
In my experience Indomethacin is hard on the stomach and used for gout and arthritis when the pain is very bad and the heck with side effects is the prescribing doctors attitude.
When you can't walk and a sheet touching your foot keeps you from sleeping, it's the Big Gun I prefer not to use, but have & will to regain function & get on with life.
And Celebrex is very effective for many, although the side effects are scary and led to a temporary banning. But as a buddy, who is on Celebrex, told his doctor, he'd already had his heart attack, so the drug had failed to kill him, so far, and it was effective in letting him get some sleep. It "stilled the chorus" of constant pain from old hip injury and old surgeries that in his opinion just damaged it worse. ( they used to pin the joint while it heals which is the opposite of today's " keep it moving to preserve future motion" methods )
In my experience celecoxib, Celebrex, does a good job on chronic pain to a point. Since my knees went well past that point and needed replacement, I was using real narcotics to keep on my feet & working for a few years. The doc found a mild one I could function on.
Surgery and PT did wonders and I've been narcotics free for over two years now, after getting off the post operation hard opiate doses.
But I know I'm subject to opiate addiction and hate the mental fog I get from the really strong ones.
That I needed prescription pain meds to work for a living for years is why I recommend consulting your doctor to find a solution that works for YOU.
instead of some drugged up idiot on the Internet, like me.
I can't take anything strong. It's primarily Ibuprofen and occasionally Aspirin for me. One helps with chronic pain and the other for when my chronic headache decides to become a migraine.
I haven't taken anything prescription strength since I was a child...and only took it once. That cloudy disconnected feeling is not for me. It was only Aspirin 3 with Codeine.
A guy I knew got hooked on narcotic pain killers and took his own life about a year later. Crazy how a regular guy can have his life ruined so quickly by such a common thing.
The other day I made a couple woodworking tools to inlet the stock of my Ithaca for the sling swivel. I guess I'd rather invest time than money in acquiring tools I'll likely only use once. All that's left is to slot the barrel for the bayonet adapter/heat shield and acquire proper screws to secure my fancy rubber butt plate.
True anecdote. I got a new primary care physician when my old one moved away.
My buddy who is also a hurting unit told me the very first words out of my mouth should be "We need to talk about pain management", just to get her to understand her new patient.
Ok, why not! ( because she'll think I'm an addict looking for drugs, that's why )
So.... Right after "hello", "We need to talk about pain management".
Yes, she gave me The Look. ( $%&$ing druggie )
While she skims my file on her laptop, with a closed & unhappy expression, I gave her the medical history. Surgeries, heart attack, full contact martial arts, high skill/high impact flying and biking, physically demanding job.
Suddenly she stops. Reads aloud, "moderate to severe degenerative arthritis" . Glances at me, startled. Pushed button, X-Ray on screen. Winces. Whips out prescription pad, scribbles, "here, we'll try this first".
And she's been understanding and willing to change my meds as needed. She moved offices 37 miles and I'm still her patient.
I can tolerate a lot of discomfort but I need something when it's too bad. As long as I can keep going with just Advil or Tylenol, I will.
Gout flare ups I need meds but generally have been able to use diet to avoid them. Recent diet changes and dehydration probably kicked off this latest attack. And Advil has been as effective for me as anything else.
Ymmv. Your chemistry is different. What you can tolerate, I may not, & vice versa.
Consult your physician.
Good luck.
Second, shorter anecdote.
My cardiologist, a great guy with blunt bedside manner, asked my pain level once 1-10 scale and I said 5-7 when it's bad ( during a heart attack ). He said every other patient with my readings says 9-11. I explained I did full contact martial arts. "Oh, you're one of those."
Follow up anecdote.
I was at a fighting event, getting my arms and armor inspected at the Marshal's tent, when an old buddy shows up & we begin "the organ recital", heart attacks, medical disasters, the usual. I conclude with "my doc doesn't want me to fight anymore, but F$%& him!" then I look back into the tent and the ( all younger ) Marshals are staring at us, now terrified these geezers are going to drop dead on the spot.
So I step on out to the practice field, in front of them, pick out a younger white belt ( the highest rank fighter, a Knight ) and proceed to go five quick full intensity fights with him, then spank 2 more, ditto, before stopping for a break & some water. Stunned silence from the still staring Marshals.
Wish I was there for their comments later. "Old White haired guy, tells his buddy his doctor won't let him fight, then hammers through 3 pickup fights with top rank fighters.... Wtf?"
After my rebuild in '08 (should we start a new thread here...?) they had me on severe narcotics in the hospital...then sent me home with a scrip for less than 5% of what I was on in-house.
DT's suck.
I asked my doc at the time "why am I shaking, chills, hot flashes...?". She said you're going through withdrawal. I asked can I just quit cold turkey? She said sure, but the next 36 hours or so are gonna suck for you.
I flushed every one of them.
I don't take anything stronger than ibuprofen, normally. Well...there's a nice 18 year old scotch in the cabinet too...
IF things get hateful and I just can't make it stop, I will take 222 - an over the counter Johnson and Johnson product from Canada. ONE pill quiets the throbbing, stops the structural pain from barometer shifts and permanent metal implants in legs and knees and hips, and allows me to think and be productive. No hangover, no fuzziness, nothing like that.
It's rare. I have a bottle of 222 that I got maybe back in '10, still 3/4 full. But, nice to know it's there if things get too hateful. The only prescriptions I'll ever take are in the antibiotic family, to get rid of infections - pain, I work through it. I'd rather fix the problem, than cover the symptom.
I don't like anything that clouds my mind. I don't like walking around un-armed. My wife went and picked up the indomethacin for me. I ate a frozen dinner while she got it. Then doubled the first dose and went to bed. It is dangerous for me to carry a cane in place of a firearm. I do not have the hesitation to use the cane like I would with a 2A. I was trained on where not to hit and consider it a defensive weapon. The pain has to be intolerable before I visit the doctor for help. I don't ask for pain meds. I ask them to make it stop before I cut it off at the knee. I'm only half kidding as the left knee has went septic from it in the past. They gave me morphine that time and it didn't scratch the pain. Big pain killers just seam to make me throw up. No fun in them. I prefer to just be put to sleep. So when prescribed something nasty, I usually just go to bed.
How many out of shape fat people are runni..../waddling around with ARs thinking they are an effective militia in the US?
I'm seriously thinking about bobbing the hammer and removing the single action cocking notch from the Model 66 when I get it. It just looks right on a gun like that, and I never use single action, anyway. It's a pretty simple procedure. I've done it once befoe.
To this guy:
I finished my trench gun yesterday. I'll have to post some pics soon. I do like it...though it is a bit silly with the bayonet attached.
Top three targets these days, for mass shootings? (you'll note, they're all "gun free zones", AKA "soft targets")
1. Schools. 2. Churches. 3. Night clubs.
I'm a sound guy / production engineer / live concert production.
Do the math.
3 mags tonight through the 10" target in the back yard. Laser drifted a bit since my last practice session and shots were going high (about 3" high at 20')...fixed that.
I don't know if the Hoppe's, or my dinner, smelled better afterwards!
For the record, Gaithersburg (about 35 minutes from me) is a DC suburb. Affluent. In the "I-270 Technology Corridor", heavy with Big Pharma and big tech. Also, located in my *lovely* home state, who's considering allowing illegals to obtain drivers licenses.
I got my 33% IPSC rifle target. It's cute. I'll be setting it up at 100 yards or so.
A coworker pointed out that my Glock slide dragged a bit with the trigger held fully to the rear...something I never really noticed. I spent some time adjusting trigger bar tab and connector angles (I.E. bending them) and assembling/disassembling the frame until the gun worked with nothing dragging. It's a really fine line between working and not. Eventually I got the trigger bar to *just* clear the slide with the trigger pulled fully rearward after releasing the striker. My fingers are still sore after spending so much time perfecting "perfection." For a perfect gun, people sure screw around with them a lot.
Yeah, I need to fiddle with the XDs a bit. The slide lock tab that holds the slide open, is getting finicky. It locks back after the last round just fine, but either the latch or my technique (I can guess which is the culprit) is making it more difficult to manually lock it back, like when I prep to strip and clean it. Unless I'm missing something during cleaning, but I can't see that being the case...
I'm also thinking about rounding the corners on the break trigger a bit; last night, for the first time, it was really bugging my finger. The trigger sections are a little square-edged where they transition from face to side; I think some emery cloth in there will make it a bit smoother-acting. Or...again...my technique just sucks. Or it did last night, anyway.
But...every round went on-target, and that's what really counts
And...Hoppe's can absolutely smell better than a bachelor's microwave dinner (Marie Callender's chicken and broccoli alfredo last night). The food's not bad...it's just nothing to write home about. But after working all day, coming home at 8, loading all my equipment in the truck for tonight's gig (today's an 18 hour day), getting my range time in before darkness, and finally getting time to "cook"...there's something to be said for a 4 minute prep time!
Thanks! Guys on a shotgun forum (of all places) told me that the bayonet is a toy that would get me killed, and that it was only good as a museum piece or wall hanger. It's been my favorite pump shotgun to shoot, ever...and is every bit as functional as anything modern out there. I'd much prefer it to a 590A1 and like it a lot better than I ever did my 870 Wingmaster.
Just because it had military use starting in WWII doesn't make it any less a shotgun.
It's been my favorite pump shotgun to shoot, ever...
John Moses Browning designed the basic gun, didn't he? somewhat changed when Ithica started manufacture, but not much. ( I forget what changes were made, but IIRC they were good )
