In my ongoing quest to get my s3 running, I’ve decided to replace the CPS. I do not have the HD breakout box or ecmspy. I only have ecmdroid that (to my knowledge) doesn’t have a timing voltage option. Is there a way to set timing without these? |

With my X-1 - 1.Rear wheel off the ground 2. Remove spark plugs and put the bike in 5th gear 3. 'Bump' the crank over by turning the rear wheel until the front cyl is on the compression stroke. 4.Remove the timing plug at the base of the cylinders. 5.Continue 'bumping' the crank until the fuel pump 'fires'. 6.Timinig is correct if the timing mark is in the middle of the hole when the fuel pump cycles. Mark the old one in relation to the notch. Place the new one on as close to the same marks. It’ll be close enough to crank. Then use a timing light. |

Dave (Akbuell)- I followed your instructions. I turned the motor over numerous times thru entire compression cycle and my fuel pump never "fired". It was in 5th gear. ignition and run switches on. Bike on a rear wheel stand. Kickstand up. |

I never had any luck using the fuel pump method. |

That's weird, Alice. Have used this method at various times; always worked as advertised. Turn the switches on. Does the CEL cycle and the fuel pump run for a second or two? If not, that is the first issue to resolve. Check every fuse, electrical connection, relay and switch you might have worked with and insure they are 'correct'. DAMHIK to ask that question. Low battery voltage? If the fuel pump does cycle, go to the left side of the bike, place a finger over the front spark plug hole, and turn the engine over until air starts escaping. You are now definitely on the compression stroke. Use a pointer of choice and put it in the spark plug hole. A drinking straw works well. Soft enough to not hurt anything, long enough to not fall into the cyl if you drop it. Get the piston to TDC, using the pointer. You will know when you get there. Go to the right side of the bike, and look in the inspection port. You should see the TDC scribe on the flywheel. If not, turn the crank over slightly forward/backwards till it shows. Now you are exactly where you need to be. Turn the switches on, wait a short bit for fuel pressure to bleed off, and try again. If that doesn't work, I don' know what to say. May be bring it by my house and we can work on it? Dave |
