backing off the timing is a bit important. For sure. That was necessary with my X1 as well. It was detonating quite a bit before we made some adjustments there. on an even side(r) note.... is your tank sitting on a cat? Haha, no, but it's definitely something the cats liked to sit on back in the day  bet ya cant wait to push that button for the first time and the cringe expecting something to go pop. at least I did hahaha Oh for sure. And having not ever ridden an S1, I can't wait to find out what that's like either. Just a few more weekends now, I think. In terms of parts, all we're waiting for now is a rear brake line and a clutch cable. Other than that, we're pretty much set. Looking back on it, this project snowballed into something a bit bigger than just 'restoring it to roadworthy'. With the exception of preventative work on the crankshaft/big-end, painting the cases and painting the frame, there isn't much that we left untouched... though perhaps that is just how far you have to go if something has been sitting for this damn long? on a side note, our trip to the dragon was pushed back to 7/6 so I now have plenty of time to break in/dyno. Thanks! I don't actually remember whether we asked Twin Motorcycles about the bushings... maybe we did but we decided that, with the bike having run only 14k miles, the bushings would probably still be ok. This was confirmed when we replaced the seals, there was very little wear on the bushings. | ||

I never found the bushings when I did mine. I just replaced the seals and they were fine. I've seen people use zerts to keep their bearing lubes. Did you just drill a hole and plug it with something after so you cam use a normal syringe? | ||

Yeah, we just bought a replacement dust cap actually. Punched a hole in the old one, jammed in the syringe, filled it up with oil and put the new, undamaged cap back in. | ||

Whether it's fitting the intake manifold, the carburetor or the exhaust - every square inch of the bike's fighting us before yielding that inch of territory. Almost everything requires some kind of customization or ample amounts of cursing - or both before it's as it should be. So it's not finished yet, but stuff's really happening now: Carb, air filter backing plate and headers on:  Headers do look nice:  Exhaust (ended up going with the Supertrapp, I'll see if I can quiet it down some) with newly made bracket on:    Oil filter on:  Oil in:  Handlebar and clocks on:  The original set of bars turned out to be bent during one its mishaps. Luckily we had one extra from an XB12S. Had to drill a new hole for the switchgear though. New grips (helluvajob):  Kind of where we're at. Tank isn't on permanently yet, still need to figure out some of the wiring loom up there. But it looks nice like this:  | ||

Looks great, and I totally understand the fighting and cursing. It was the same with my S1, but once together it sure is fun to ride. As a note, I'm willing to bet that front exhaust hanger strap will be broken an hour into the first ride. I went through 3-4 different hanger arrangements before finally finding something that was sturdy enough to handle the abuse that motor transmits across those hanger brackets. | ||

Heads up on that longer filter: I was told they vibrate loose and it should be secured with safety wire. I think the preferred method is a wormgear clamp on the filter with a wire going to the anchor. Picture is of some random thing I googled:  | ||

Thanks Nate, I will look into that! As a note, I'm willing to bet that front exhaust hanger strap will be broken an hour into the first ride. Yeah, was afraid of that. I had some hope that the fact it's suspended (at the top at least) in a silent-block would give it a fighting chance, but I'll keep an eye on it, for sure. I totally understand the fighting and cursing. It was the same with my S1, but once together it sure is fun to ride. Can't wait. With regards to the process: it's educational if nothing else :P. | ||

That tab at the end of the header gets attached via a bracket to I believe the front shock mount. If I remember correctly from my S1 days. Seems to help quell some vibrations. SteveH | ||

Thanks for pointing that out. I figured it was maybe to attach the header to the stock pipe, but no, it is a 35 dollar bracket I'm missing :P. | ||

On the later S1's, they did away with that stupid expensive twisted strap/bracket. You will find headers with that tab, and also without that tab. My S1 had a place for the tab, but it had been ripped off at some point leaving a hole in the header. The previous owner wrapped that area with a thin piece of sheet metal and a few heavy duty exhaust clamps. I had a buddy tig weld a stainless steel patch over the hole where the tab had been located. Anyway.....to shorten things up, I'm not using the tab and my exhaust is rock solid with no issues. Granted it took me a few trial an errors to get it to that point, but none of them involved that little twisted bracket. | ||

Interesting, thanks for sharing that. I admit, having invested such a princely sum to get these headers looking nice again, it would be a shame to have hole ripped in them :P. | ||

yes...an expensive piece it is. Oopezoo- id be curious to see what your final result was. you mentioned on later models they omitted the tab/lil twisted bracket. mines from 7/98 and still has these. in the one pic of the exhaust hanger, youre only using one leg of the hanger. I think it would make more sense to make a spacer and thru-bolt everything to utilize both legs, no? (Message edited by mike lee on April 24, 2019) | ||

For sure, it would... Yeah might not be a bad idea to go back to the drawing board on this one. Maybe find someone that can properly work some metal for us, get ourselves a beefier bracket. | ||

That little twisted bracket is definitely a sad looking piece. I still have it on mine because it was already there, but I've always been skeptical of it doing much at all. The connection is no where near rigid enough to really provide any support, and the fact that the bracket twists means that one end bots horizontally and the other bolts vertically, so aside from any friction from the bolts, it has free range of motion. The only thing it might slightly help with is front to back motion, but I doubt even that would be noticeable. I agree with Mike, even if you don't want to complete redesign your front mount, maybe replace that thin piece of metal with something closer to 1/8-1/4" thick, get a longer bolt and cut a spacer to mount it through both sides of the exhaust mount. Maybe make the new piece in the shape of a triangle, and put 2 of those clamps on the exhaust to stiffen it up. | ||

I'll snap some pics tonight. Take into account that my exhaust was a mess when I bought the bike. I have a 2" header with a Borla muffler. Turns out the muffler was poorly mounted and basically destroyed all of the mounting tabs within a week of owning it. I had to either come up with a way to reuse my header and Borla can, or buy a completely new exhaust system for it $$$. It took some patience, trial, and error, but it held itself together for a complete riding season last year so I think its good to go now. I'll let the pics do the talking once I snap some. | ||

On the long oil filters, I’ve run them for 24 years on assorted Buells from my S2, S1, S3 and M2’s. Never had one come loose. Sounds like an urban myth. I run factory black units. I like a bit more oil and extra filter area. Kevin | ||

Perhaps urban myth. I think I read of it in the old "X1-files" site. Personally, I never experimented with different oil filters and just kept using the H-D sportster ones. | ||
