It's that whole "pretty much" thing that gets me. It's absolutely making a mountain out of a mole hill as I seriously doubt I'll ever be able to use either bike to it's full potential. Everyone I've heard talk about Buell Vs. any other bike has said that the Buell's have a much higher fun factor. That's what I'm really interested in. The other route I may go is a Buell powered chopper on a frame of my own creation. I've never made a frame before but "what could go wrong"  ? | ||

I can't believe anyone would prefer the sound of an i4 over a twin... Even as a little kid I've been in love with how twins sound. I just loved the bmw's and ducs and guzzi's. Then my brother got a cbr 900 or someting, sounded like a friggin' sewing machine! My 80cc 2-stroker sounded better than that! Nah, i4's sound too smooth for me, unless we're talking gp bikes  | ||

Speed is relative,going 180 plus around turn eight at willow seems somewhat sedate,when everyone else is doing the same.I have more fun on the slow turny roads like palomar or ortega,it's all about FUN,not speed,and the 9r makes me smile more than just about any bike,('cept maybe that gp bike I rode once). | ||

Well, I guess I was turned on to the IL4 sound by my love of F1 and my 82 CB750F-SS w/ a 4to1 Kerker pipe . It really does sound quite nice at 11K RPM's. edited by M1combat on May 25, 2004 | ||

It sounds a good deal deeper than any of the new bikes. It has an excellent sounding idle too . Too bad I just rebuilt it and gave it away (well, traded it for a KLR). | ||

A bit of clarification... It is not just the low center of gravity, short wheel base and step rake making the bike nimble that makes it fun and fast through the turns... but, couple those features with the more friendly bottom-end torque delivery of a big twin and the average rider (me and you) will be able to get through the turns faster.... with bigger smiles. That is what separates the Buells from all the others, especially the IL4s. I want to be there when you (the average rider) delivers 180hp to the rear in a turn... well only if you can do it without incident. And, if you can, I'll be watching you from the grandstand as you'll be a world champion racer. Until then you'll just want to be. | ||

Im shure the Jap bikes are fast as hell but my experience with them long ago showed major speedo error. I recall them reading about 20% faster than actual. | ||

420: an 02 R1 has a 1/4 turn throttle....so if you had 1/4 turn left to go then you would be idling with the throttle closed. MrClean | ||

Thought I would start by introducing myself to The Bad Weather Bikers . Have been reading along for about a year, enjoing most of the threds and pictures, and also tech-info. Hello!! I'm Michael aka Shred I've owned three motorcycles wanted something different, I'm a V twin man and I like the design of the Buell. Like some people I wanted somthing different with a V-Twin. I met Scott Zampack aka Z man, he introduced me to the XB9R, end of story. I bought one late Sept. '02 but it's an '03. Now I have 22,500+. Less than 400 miles on hwy, all the rest are backroads and the North Georgia Mtns. Glitch and I met a little over a year ago on the side of the road passing eachother. Little did I know he lived less than a mile away. We've logged about 15,000 miles together, 10 of which were in the North GA Mtns. Which involves Hwy 60-hwy 180- hwy 17/129. I belong to the local BRAG club 3% Bragging Rights out of Stone Mtn GA our club is young but so far great. Our Buell Demo's in Suches, GA at the TWO was awesome and I was happy to be a part of it. I want to thank Pete aka 'Torquer' for his support and starting the BRAG club. I believe the bike would easily go over 200 mph There is *nothing* easy about getting a bike over 200 mph. Even the sharpest weapon in the speed wars ('busa) takes quite a bit of work to break the 200 mark. Just ask the guy Richard was chatting with on the starting line at Bonneville  Henrik (and no, I wouldn't like to try) | ||

Shred; The 182mph you were asking about was happened in Germany. Where it is a bit safer (not safe) to try it on public roads. Most drivers are more considerate there. They stay out of the left lane unless passing. I know you like to go fast . Your front wheel probably has flat spots on it from all the wheelie touch downs. Didn't I see you in a picture posted on a previous thread... covering your face? | ||

Why people assume all the fun is to be had at Buell pace is beyond me. There's a lot of fun to be had at 150 + mph. You should try it sometime. Every biker should be capable of riding at hyper speed. If they are not I'd doubt their ability at any other speed. As for 200mph - it's easy. Chris Vermulen's Fireblade production racer hit 200.5mph in testing at Monza's WSB round. This Blade was a stock bike 4 months previous. They bought and fitted a race kit, which anyone can do. Arrow helped develop an exhaust and Ten Kate tuned it to perfection. All this anyone can buy \ do and 200mph is in your grasp. How about Michael Rutter's 201.1mph at Ireland's closed road Northwest 200 circuit recently. More amazing, Rutter reckoned the geared the bike with 500 rpm to spare which would have given them 210mph. See, it's EASY  Rocket | ||

Ortegakid- I see we have a few things in common. I've made small modifications of my own along with the Buell race kit. I reversed my shifter it was pretty cool. Had a ninja 600 89 GSXR/750 I made sliders for my swing arm, they worked. Unfortunetly a couple weeks ago I went down. little road rash on my legs. I had boots,gloves,leather jacket,I just didn't have any of my leather pants on, our my Joe-Rocket Razor suit, just 505 levis first time down on the XB9R 22,500 miles. Wasn't first time down. Started street riding in 88 legally. Road atl. is awsome never been on the track would like to some day.Tall-Gp, Jennings Gp, cheaper . Then for alitle mre money Barber!!! Yeah come on ! The North GA MTNS are wicked Hwy-60 by Suches Hwy-180, Hwy17/129, Hwy348 aka Richard russel Parkway. North Carolina,etc,etc.In sept the Ridge run in N.C . If you can make it, come on. The atl Harley/buell rents. Fly and then ride. | ||

I hate to admit it but one of the funnest moments I've ever had on a Buell was in first gear. One on the road from Angeles Crest to Mt. Wilson. Rocketman is correct. Going fast is easy... Just tuck in... roll it back it wait for the rev limiter. The bikes can do it now-a-days without wiggling around due to chassis flex. That was not the case on my old Kowy H1. You get that old "widow maker" close to top speed and if the road bends at all, you needed a bunch of confidence. It was challenging . That made it fun. Str8 line speed on a modern bike, in the real world, only challenges your ability to face your instinct thats telling you there is not enough time to react if something happens an 1/8 of a mile ahead or if you come to some debris in he road or the unseen accident around the next turn... My friend was blistering a path home on his local hwy at night when he came around a turn to find several cars backed up... the reason; blue lights working an accident. He was going too fast to stop. He had to split lanes through the backed up cars and shot right through the scene, running over a bumper cover. He stopped about 150 yrds down the road, looked back and saw everyone looking at him dumbfounded. So he hauled •••. Going fast is easy... Its those unexpected stops that can prove challenging. | ||

The most fun for me is riding in the mountains, "The Great Equalizer", we ride along with all kinds of bikes up there, and most all the time the bikes seem about equal, it's the rider that makes the difference up there. The handling of the Buell gives me more confidence, and that makes me more smooth, and that makes me faster with less effort, which is all the fun at a Buell pace. | ||

Fast bikes fail to constantly, as a great handling Buell, remind me what a crummy rider I am. I prefer that lesson at a metered pace. Court (who has been known to travel to CA to give lessons from Ferris Bueller of all folks...please ignore the fact that I was the one who, the last time, tossed the M2 on Angeles Crest.....oooooooops) | ||

Rocket's got a point -- skill can be measured in many ways . . . . I LOVED racing when I activly participated, and would LOVE to do so again (filthy lucre, a college-aged offspring, consideration for a wife with patience of truly homeric proportions, and my slowing reflexes are all that stand in the way of THAT!) . . . for years, I was perfectly happy with my hotrod 500 single, given the roads I tended to ride . . . . my Buell has upped the pace on those roads, allowed me to go fast enough to make other roads more interesting, and I'm sure I'd enjoy somthing faster, if I had regualr access to the appropriate venues . . . . the MaDeuece is more bike than I am rider at, say, the Gap or the Cheroholla . . . but the link it has to my giggle-center is the deciding factor for me . . . . | ||
