I have the Ventura L-bracket and Sport Rack (link: https://www.ventura-mca.com/1125R-1125CR#). The L-Bracket held on the bike by at most 2 fairly small bolts (M6?). Two horizontal bolts holding the two sides of the rack together, and two vertical bolts hold the rack to the bike, from the underside (holding the rack up). Can I trust it to actually hold a Large (46L) topcase with luggage? It seems like the whole thing would pop off at the smallest bump in the road. Anyone have experience with this rack and loading it with some weight? I ask because when I had my KLR650, the top box was held down (not held up) by two M6 bolts. The box normally rested on the subframe and the bolts only kept it from bouncing up when hitting a bump. Even so, it's very common for these bolts to snap in tension on the KLR650. I had that happen to me, multiple times, even with 12.9 grade bolts. I'm worried that these M6 bolts that are always suspending the Ventura rack will snap like twigs at the first bump. Thoughts? |

Grade 12.9 is a very hard bolt easy to snap no give. Try a softer grade bolt. |

What are 12.9 bolts used for vs softer bolts? |

There is some misunderstanding here. First, all bolts are weakest in shear as opposed to tension. This sounds like a design fault. Another consideration is fatigue resistance. If the fastener is flexing, failure is guaranteed. Lastly, metric grade 12.9 is superior in all departments over lesser graded fasteners. Google here is your friend. |

I've been using ventura racks and bags for years, often overloaded, never had an issue |

Stevel if 12.9 are so superior, why are the caliper bolts on the motorcycle 8.8 ? |

Froggy, Would you mind posting a pic of the undertail side (looking at an angle, so I can see the side portion too) of your Ventura rack mount? Thanks! |
