It's taken ten years, but I have found an answer:  These are grip skins from Tech Spec. About $70 on Amazon. There are panels for the airbox cover which I have not used. The skins are thick silicone and do not transmit heat. It has been about 105F or so for my afternoon commute for the past several days. The air coming off of the engine is till extremely hot, but my knee/leg contacting the frame is no longer a problem. When I park the bike I note that I can hold my hand against the grip skin as long as I choose. Not so with the frame. | ||

I was wondering the same thing. If they were only $40 I probably would have tried them a long time ago. Then, a few weeks ago, I was removing a pan from the oven, using a silicone square thingy, and it dawned on me that if this thin thing works for a 450f pan, pads twice as think should surely work on a 200F (or less) frame. | ||

The riding lights are by Motolight (Motolite?). Pricey, but very, very, well built. 'Tank grips' are quite popular for motorcycle racing. Most are some sort of highly textured silicone pad. Textured enough that they wear into your leathers. The Tech Spec grip skins don't cause the wear problem (much) and are made of thicker material than other tank grips. Heat is generally not much of a problem through competition weight leather so I did not immediately make the connection, although I did think about it. It wasn't until I was taking that pan out of the oven that I realized that the skins really would work. I am amazed every day that I have no issue at all keeping my leg in contact with the frame. | ||

Winter? You mean when temperatures drop way down into the 60s? I think that it will still be OK. | ||

I started riding in Iowa. There's a reason that I stayed out here after college. I did ride year 'round in Ames. Any day that the roads were clear (enough). One pair of gloves rolled up under the carburetors heating up, the other pair on my hands getting cold. | ||

Tech Spec is great stuff. Been using them on and off for years. Great as frame protection too. |
