I have 2 shocks. One is from a 98 S1 that I bought for a project, the other is of unknown origin. They are both 16.5 inch. Are all 16.5 inch shocks pre-recall? If not, how would I identify them. They both need a rebuild but I'm skeptical about putting any money into them. I've also heard others on here say not to worry about pre-recall that they are very unlikely to fail.
Thanks for the help

16.5 exposed spring shocks (WP) - all were recalled, regardless of model application.
16.5 shocks with covered springs were recalled depending entirely on the year/model (and build date range) of the motorcycle they were fitted to.

If it is the exposed spring shock then I would run it. I ran one with no issues. This subject has been gone over manyvtimes on this board and the General sensus from those in the know was that the exposed spring shock never had a road failure. It failed during extreme track testing ( jumping I was told) it was recalled just to cover their asses.

There were "on the road" failures with the WP shock.

I have yet to hear from anyone that have had a WP failure. Only the stories of my brother had it happen to him. I heard this directly from thise doind the track testing.

We were asked to examine some warranty return shocks (WP) before they were palleted and sent to East Troy. A couple of those in that group had the broken "shock eye".
