Long story short- I killed the battery working on my 07 XB12X and I did the bad thing of jumping it with my truck. Bike starts but runs like dung so obviously I fried something. After talking with some bikers at work I learned that this was a stupid move. So it appears the rear cylinder is not firing. Exhaust is cold from the rear. Popped the plug and it had fuel on it. Cranked engine with another plug connected to the rear coil outlet and grounded - no spark. Is there any way to determine if it is coil, ECM or other. I have a spy cable coming and software loaded but wanted to get a head start on getting it sorted. Dennis |

12V is 12V. If you jumped your bike from a car/truck, and went pos to pos and neg to neg, AND the car/truck was not running, you are fine. Jump starting from a running car/truck, it is possible for the bikes voltage regulator to be fried. Pull the air box cover to get to the coil, and follow the instructions in the manual. A multimeter will let you know if the coil is healthy or not. Hope this helps, Dave |

LOL, I was thinking the same as you until I reached, "... car/truck not running" It was running. Pulled coil to trouble shoot with a multi meter and it was visibly cracked and oozing. It obviously failed resistance check. Thanks for the help. |

OK, one problem identified. Take the battery and have it checked to confirm it is in good condition. Charge it, and reinstall. BTW, if it is over 3 years old, you might want to consider replacing it. Prior to connecting the new coil, confirm 12V to the center pin of the harness connector. With a multimeter installed, start the engine. If you see 14.5V or so, then run up to 2K RPM. You should still see something in the 14.5V or so. If the voltage is 15V or higher, the voltage regulator is probably damaged, and will need to be replaced. Hope this helps, and you are welcome. Glad to help. Dave |

Good to hear. Glad the self inflicted damage was close to nil. You are very welcome. Dave |
