2000 X-1 30k miles on it.
Since I bought this bike in 2001, if I remember correctly. I have had a surging issue at times.
Exp - I finish running on the hwy & come off to a stop for town. Not a greatly hot day & my bike will surge from 1k to 1200-1500k. It usually will idle steady at 1000k.
Or I will be doing a regular ride & come home & the bike will not idle down in the drive. Yesterday I came in & had surging. BTY, The head temps were 400*.
I let it idle in the drive & it came down in about 5 min, when the heads were at 350*.
It just always bothered me not to have a smooth idle all the time and the bike really shakes at high idle.
I know that none of you would know squat about head temp since you don't have a gauge. I just post it for extra info.

BTY - engine is mostly stock with new dyno mapping, but it has always done this surging thing.
And I have an oil cooler on it.

Usually that kind of surging, and especially the 'hanging ' return to idle is a sign of leaking intake manifold gaskets. The next time you get a situation like in the driveway, add just a touch of clutch to slow the engine a bit. If it immediately goes to 1k RPM and stays there, then the gaskets are leaking. The drop in head temp and return to idle tells me that as temps drop, the leak gets sealed.

surging is usually vacuum leak - spray with WD see if idle changes

Could be skip spark. Set your idle to around 900RPM. Here’s my S3 on skip spark: https://youtu.be/ICOvEBQmeBA

WRONG.

Idle is 1050. Feed the engine the oil pressure it needs.

Here’s where the suggestion came from:

1050 is always what we recommended - for oil delivery but mostly for accelerating off idle. The slightly higher idle reduced the chance of a hiccup/hesitation off idle.
Unlike the CV carb, blipping the throttle instantly opened a 45mm hole that was a challenge to compensate for by mapping - the slightly higher idle setting helped.
