Any help is appreciated. I just put my M2 back together (whole cometic gasket kit from jugs to rocker boxes). After getting everything together I started it up and it made the noise in the video. Any thoughts?
Followed the manual for everything.

I had a similar tapping on my 2002 stock M2 motor last year after replacing the rocker covers with XB parts. After re-checking everything and finding no interferences with moving parts, I took a chance that the noise was just a lifter that needed to pump up. So I let it idle for a few minutes and the tapping finally stopped. I cannot prove that was really the problem, but it has been fine since. I hope it is something simple for you.

After a several weeks of being parked for a transmission repair on my 2000 M2 it took about 10 minutes for that tapping to stop.

Did you allow the lifters to bleed down before tightening the heads down

Jamie04/H0gwash,

Thanks for the responses guys. That makes me feel a bit better. Is there major damage potential if I let it idle for 10 minutes or so?

Gusm2,

I remember reading about letting them bleed down but I didn't fully understand what it meant. When I put the heads on I made sure the pistons were TDC and both pushrods were at their lowest positions. I then put the head on and finger tightened the bolts to see what kind of gap there was due to the rods. I think I messed about with them finger tight for at least ten minutes each head but I didn't specifically wait any longer or check or test anything else.

I will say this, the bike has sat for 2 years and after I put everything back together finally, it literally started up on the first button push of the started and sounded great, less the tapping sound. I did not let it run for longer than 15 seconds three times.

Yep, my s2 did the same. One time I took off the rocker boxes and it didn’t tick one time. The second time I took it down it scared me to death. Sounded like a box of rocks, thought maybe a circlip had popped out. Anyway, I just let it idle about 5 mins and it went away.

If you have Facebook, we had a discussion on the S2 group here:

Guys,

I NEVER would have just run the motor to see if it went away. Never. After about ten minutes of running it and blipping the throttle here and there the noise is gone.

Thanks a lot. If anyone is ever in Pittsburgh, let me know, I'll buy a beer.

I'm not on Facebook but thanks for the information. If I ever get back on I'll join up.
