On a cold start, it lights up all the LEDs on my kuryakin voltmeter thing (18V!). Headlights flickering indicates the voltmeter is telling the truth.
I turned it off and then restarted it. didn't do it again. I drove it to work and then when leaving work, it did it again.
When I got it home, I checked the battery terminals and found both to be a bit loose.
I thought I found it but this morning, it did it again.

So only when cool, it overcharges.

Anyone have something like this happen on theirs?

Yes, right before it blew out my headlights! The regulator is going bad is what it sounds like but you need to check the stator first. There's three test in the book and it needs to pass every test or it's bad. Don't just change the VR without testing the stator, you could wipe out the new VR if it's bad. DAMHIK!

Yeah I was afraid of that. not too many components in the charging system there.
This is my second regulator.
The first one just got weak but didn't actually fail.
The voltmeter went from two green LEDs to one.

Looks like I'm the culprit again!
I poked around the regulator wiring at work before starting it up and sure enough, I routed the wires to touch the fins on the engine.

I moved the wire away from the engine and it didn't do anything wrong on the way home.
I just need to reroute the cable and wrap it with something durable.

You can see a little notch was arced out of the fin in this zoomed in picture!

Good catch! As they say, if you have problems after you work on something, go back and look at what you did! Glad it was an easy fix!

Dammit. I took the regulator off and fixed the insulation. All was well for a couple of rides but it did it again this morning.

The short must have tweaked something a little.

Symptom is the same: overcharges on cold startup and goes fine once warm.
I can shunt it back to green by turning on all of my lights at once.

If I were you I would park that bike until I got a new regulator. Taking wiring harnesses apart to replace charred wires isn't as much fun as most people think it is.

Agreed. Put that on my 06 and haven't looked back. Rock-solid unit, and very universal / easy to replace in the future.

I had one on the Uly. I've been waiting for the OEM VR on Lil Red to go out. I have one in my spares to put on it. Can't bring myself to swap it while it it still good. I have 2 voltage monitors running on it.

Those seem to be for three phase stators.
Won't it be de-rated by running it on a third of its diodes?

Ran just fine on the 08 single phase. You just hook up 2 of the 3 connections.

Yeah, the instructions from Roadstercycle say it’s okay to use on either. Haven’t looked at their site in a while, but I thought they also had a three phase stator that could be installed on the newer bikes should the old single phase give up the ghost at some point. I have their VR on my 08 after going through a number of stock ones with no other problems so far. Hopefully that’s all I’ll have to worry about anyhow.

For the sake of closure, I post the "exciting" conclusion.

I went with a stocker because they were less than $100 and I didn't have to rewire anything.
Two plugs, three screws and a couple of zipties later it's back in order again.
