Hey guys, I'm in the middle of replacing my oil pump drive gear so last night I removed the rocker boxes and pulled the cam cover. 3 of the cams basically fell out but the bigger one (second from left) is stuck in the cover. Is there something that holds it in behind the timing cover? |

Could it be the cam that drives the ignition timing bits? If so, there will be a bolt that holds the timing 'stuff' to the cam. To avoid confusion for me, starting from front to rear, cam 1, 2, 3, or 4? |

yes, it's the one that drives the ignition timing, thanks for your reply! |

You are welcome. One caution: When I did my X-1, it was winter in Alaska, so I had lots of time to do the work. Buttoned everything back up, waited more for the conditions to improve to go riding. Started the engine, and Immediately Shut It Down. It sounded so bad I just knew I had put something back together wrong, and mentally prepared to do the job over. Thought about it some more, and decided the lifters had 'bled down', and the noise I was hearing was excess valve clearance. Did a sub 2k RPM trip around the block, and all was well. Just so you know. Hope this helps, Dave. |

Yeah, valve clatter is nervewracking. Pull the lifters and put them in a glass of oil while you do the work. Nearly as freaky as a diesel startup after a fuel filter replacement! |

When I do this I pull the plugs, rotate the rear wheel with the bike in gear to rotate the motor through several rotations, helps move things around and you can hear anything that doesn't sound right without actually hitting the starter button and "forcing" things to move rapidly... after a few rotations by hand, I leave the plugs out and rotate the motor a few different times with the starter, this begins to move things fast enough to actually move oil through out the system. then I put the plugs in put leave the wires off (fuel off as well) and do the same thing, now your moving things through an actual compression cycle, but don't spin it to long... Finally connect the plug wires, turn the fuel on and and fire it up and its a whole lot less noisy and scary |
