Well I hope I’m not being too premature here. Last week almost near home I noticed my speedometer not working, no other problems or cel’s at all. Didn’t look at it then, figured I’d take it into the shop Saturday and check it out. Rode there yesterday and it worked fine. Did a cursory check of the wiring, found nothing and decided just to take it for a ride. Everything was good for about an hour, then the cel caught my eye. The speedometer was dead again and this time I had a light. Got home and checked, it was code 43 and no others. Code 43 has two meanings that are similar, either speed sensor is out of range or high. According to the manual, if there was a short to power or ground then I’d have another code too. It is possible to have a bad sensor, but I also wonder if there could be an open wire instead? I know from stuff that I normally work on that this would basically give an “out-of-range” code. Anyone else experience this?

When mine failed, it didn't trow any code, just stopped giving speed. While I was still rolling, I would turn off the bike and back on and the speedo would work again.

The final straw that made me get a new one was it stopped working and I looked down at my gas light being on. "F 0"
How long was I running on fumes??? I was freaking out since I was in heavy traffic in downtown Hartford, CT.
I did make it to a gas station but I was sweating bullets in a really part of town.

I have an 06 and an 07. Speedo is on and off for both of them. I just use a speedo app on my phone connected to handlebars with a RAM MOUNT. :-)

Can always pull it and clean it, they can collect junk as just a darn magnet.

The voice of reason. Now that you say that I remember it being mentioned in years past. Certainly is cheaper than 50 bucks for a new one if I don’t need it. Guess I know what I’ll be doing on Saturday, probably load test the harness too, just in case.

Get an operators tube, and an MSR camping fuel bottle (aluminum bottle). Carry a liter of spare fuel with you that way - I do, and even if it doesn't get me TO a gas station....it gets me about 17 miles closer!

+1 on cleaning the sensor. I've added it to my fluid-change service list, as preventative maintenance.

Same here. I cleaned it at least once and got a bit more life out of it. But it soon failed.

Keep in mind, this part is identical on the 1200 Sportsters. Cross reference the part number and watch on Ebay. I got mine for a song as some buy a new one, only to find theirs was not bad. It may save you some coin.

Good luck

Yesterday I rode the bike back to the shop and ignored the fact that the speedo was working fine with no code. Pulled the sensor out and gave it a good cleaning. No fuzz or heavy deposits, only a little black sludge with just a few tiny specks of metal. So I put the sensor back in and load tested the three wires between it and the ECM. Everything checked out good so I plugged it all back together and went on my way. Still working okay so I guess if it quits again then I need a sensor.

MSR camping fuel bottle

+1 I carry 2 bottles on trips. The MSR bottles seal so well I can pack them with my cloths and not stink up the luggage. I ran out one time, pushed Lil Red 3 miles on a record breaking hot day. That was enough.

Other than a few short trips, the bike has been in hibernation. High temps and high humidity are no fun for me. Yesterday was different and Britjam was the perfect excuse for a ride. Speedo worked great all the way there, thought I had it licked. On the way home, right at the 50 mile mark, the damn thing quit again and threw a code. Guess it’s new sensor time.
