What's the preferred legitimate web source for plug wires these days? Prefer OEM but will take 3rd party if guaranteed to be compatible and long enough. Not interested in ebay, HD direct, or some guy who has a few sitting around. Taylor makes a good product. I'm using Accel leads, though. Much stouter construction than the OEM parts. | ||

+1 on the Ironmachine wires. More stout than OEM, and that lip on the plug boot makes them so much easier to properly seat on the plug. Guaranteed to reduce XB plug-wire induced rage. | ||

Of course, I see this post right after I order a set of stock plug wires for my Uly. I'm in the middle of a minor maintenance cycle on mine. I had oil leaking from the rear head somewhere, rotated the engine and found it was only the PCV valve. But noticed the plug wires were worn, so I'm replacing those, too. | ||

"rotated the engine" question - how long does it take to rotate the engine? I mean realistically - is it a day job to "rotate" it down, and a day job to put it back together? Honest question. Thanks! (Message edited by Yan on July 25, 2018) | ||

If you don't run into any problems, you could do it in less than an hour. Drop the chin fairing and exhaust, remove the peg mounts, disconnect everything from the intake, and disconnect the engine mounting brackets. I follow the manual step by step, and then in reverse for reassembly. It probably took me a couple hours, but I was also labeling every nut and bolt that I took off, since I knew I was going to leave it in that position for a few days while I work on some mods and clean up all the grime caked on my engine from the leaking PCV valve. (I ride gravel a LOT with my Uly, so it had a nice combination of dust and oil caked everywhere) I'm doing all the usual mods/maintenance while I have it rotated - plugs, wires, cleaning, rider comfort kit, insulated the frame, adding aux lights, etc. It was overdue for a good maintenance and cleaning session. Once you've done the rotation a few times, it's pretty easy. I still reference the manual, though. Just to make sure I don't miss a step. little late on this but i just got a set of 8mm magnacore wires. being lazy and asking before researching, but can you replace the rear pvc gromment without rotation? | ||

oh, and i have used the magnacor wires before and they are at least as difficult as the oem wires | ||

I don't think you can replace the rear PCV or grommet without rotation, due to the height of the "tower" - the valve has to come straight up out of the valve cover a few inches, and it will hit the frame. You would only have to rotate the engine a few inches to clear it, though. | ||

Just confirmed - they're not coming out with the engine in place. I just finished rotating mine back up, and there's not much clearance at all. In fact, I had to rotate a hose clamp on the ECV tube just to clear the frame. It's been a productive maintenance period though - relocated the ECM, installed the rider comfort kit (yes, the fan shroud that no one ever bothers to install) re-routed the ECV lines, insulated the frame, and I'm just buttoning everything else up. Hopefully I'll be test riding tonight, fluids tomorrow, and then getting it inspected... only 1 month late! (Message edited by Starwolve on July 27, 2018) | ||

Rear PCV is a sore point with me too, and the difficulty in working on the Buell without rotating the engine is the primary reason I'm looking at putting the XT away (ride only on special occasions) in favor of a carbed Suzuki Bandit 1200n for day to day riding: air/oil cooled, carbed, very reliable, and a very handsome bike in the naked version. | ||

hello from a bueller of the past. miss my xp and all on this forum. I did the magnecor mod after getting misfire when wet. It's been a while but I remember removing the airbox and tackling this from the top. I kinda remember removing the coils and super waterproofing the connections and then wrapping electrical tape around the connections for good measure. Anyway hello to everybody and especially happy to see the ratbuell is still here, you helped me a lot. ok back to the orange crate forum. Happy trails all. miss that thunderous engine throb. |
