Yeah, not much more to it than the question in the thread title. I'm planning a trip to Germany in a couple of weeks and the exhaust I have on there now is too loud for the German police force. I can put back the stock exhaust temporarily, but I don't feel like re-threading that blasted cable all the way down there again. So yeah, is there any risk by having that valve closed permanently? |

Nope. My servo has been toast for over a year. Just a bit more quiet when I'm beating on it. |

You could always wire the valve open. There will be a slight loss of bottom end with the valve wired open. |

Is the default position for the valve open or closed? I was thinking it was open. |

i believe it is closed with the exception of WOT, (and when it cycles at start up). allows for more back pressure to help produce more low and mid range power |

The default position is closed. Having a valve that never opens will cause no damage. |

So I had an EBR Race ECM with stock exhaust. It does not operate the exhaust valve. Does that mean the exhaust valve was always closed? The problem I experienced was that it was flat below about 2,700 RPM. Since installing a stock ECM the power is better at those low revs. How does that work? |

An always-open valve impacts low end torque, generally under 1/3 throttle, an always-closed valve impacts power above about 2/3 throttle. In most cases, when using an ECM that does not command the valve, the valve is in some way locked open. If the cable is simply disconnected, a spring holds the valve closed. It is possible, that a valve held closed only by the spring may be forced (at least partially) open by exhaust flow when the throttle is twisted. (Message edited by Mark_weiss on July 06, 2018) |

for an interim, I ran an xb 12 exhaust on an 03 xb9, and it would flutter the muffler valve above 5k rpms or so... it was pretty weird feeling. |

Just a small update. I will be taking the X1 instead of the XB12scg. I've been trying to get that thing to run right for the past two weeks (it idles like absolute garbage). Checked the mapping and the ECU itself (no luck), changed out the spark plugs (no luck) and cleaned the IAC valve (also no luck). I've now ordered a completely new IAC. If that doesn't do the trick, I'm selling the bike. (Doesn't help that the Scg hasn't exactly impressed me in terms of suspension and handling.) Anyway. X1 it is. Would have taken the Uly, but it has problems with charging the battery (in that it doesn't). Pic of the X1:

Haha. Yeah it's well kept I guess. And I'm only the second owner. |

I have run my muffler open for about 6 years now on my 07 x. have done a small amount of tuning with ecm spy. I haven't experienced flat spots or any other issues. bike pulls hard thru gears without stuttering etc. I may not know what im missing as others say but I also don't have failed actuator or cable breakage etc. with prices falling on bikes now, i'm not spending extra on bike except to keep in good mechanical shape. each bike is different tho! |

I didn't think prices could fall any lower in the US. They seemed massively undervalued as they were a year or two ago. The absolute bottom for a Buell here in the Netherlands is 3500 for a Firebolt (as that seems to be the least appreciated model). (XB) Lightnings go for more, starting at 4 or 5k depending on the condition. This is all in euro btw, not dollars. S1's are already starting to climb. There's just one for sale right now, asking price of 7k. As for the trip, the X1 performed flawlessly. Just a three day weekend here in neighboring countries Belgium and Germany, but we did 6 or 700 miles or so. Still utterly in love with the machine after 5 years of ownership. The handling is great, not as nimble as an XB, but I like the added stability. And the engine is more fun somehow. |

Yeah, crazy. Every time I see a mint S1 go for a measly three thousand I wish I was in the states. |
