I have the rider comfort kit on my 07 Uly. It has always run warm, but no warmer than other air-cooled engines I've had. Question: Do those cooling fans that can be bolted on work? | ||

There isn't a bolt-on cooling fan intended for Buell XB's. There were some add-on fans for the tube frame models. The biggest improvement I made on mine was to remove the seat and airbox cover and seal off the opening in the top of the frame to the right of the rear rocker cover. When riding at speed before the fan kicks on, the rider comfort kit actually makes more hot air blow out here due to the right side scoop. This scalding hot air blows out of the gap between the seat and the frame on the right side against your inner right thigh. It also heats the whole seat up. By sealing this opening off- I used aluminum adhesive backed HVAC tape (NOT duct tape)- you force the hot air to go out the under seat shroud whether the fan has kicked on or not. | ||

aside from the comfort kit there are also fillers panels that can be purchased that fill the gap between the seat and frame on both sides where it blows out into your inner thigh. i've not installed mine because i worried about roasting the ecm. has anyone installed these little panels? Are they a good idea? Do they harm the bike but save the leg? | ||

Those little heat deflectors were a stop gap leg protector from some of the heat. The main flow is around the spring in the fender gap. Most of us ride with gear on all of the time. Those of us wearing double mesh riding pants were not feeling the heat like those wearing jeans. One very hot summer day I had on cotton shorts. The post office was two miles so I figured what the hell, I will try it. It was.so incredibly hot it burned my leg and I had to ride back standing up. | ||

The comfort kit included a cover for the rear shock which kind of negated the need for those deflectors. Most of the heat then comes out the gap between the seat and frame at the very front. If dealer installed, the comfort kit also included a flash for the ECM that turned the fan on over 15mph so that at speed the stock fan would always be trying to pull the hot air out the rear. Not 100% effective, I’ve also put the furnace tape over the opening for the rear head and that helped a lot. A side note on the comfort kit, the clamp on shield for the header apparently doesn’t last forever, mine broke up into many pieces and fell off. Oh well. |
