My 09 Uly with 23,000 miles has developed a random click that sounds like it‘s coming from the rear wheel. It is fairly loud, happens anywhere from 15 to 30 seconds while riding. I recently replaced the belt. Any thoughts? | ||

The first things I would check are the wheel bearings (both rear and front), and the belt tensioner pulleys. | ||

Thanks. I was hoping it was something simple. The tensioner seemed fine when i replaced the belt. I didn't pull the axle when i replaced the belt, just loosened it. | ||

That really sounds like a wheel bearing to me too. Mine did that when I was backing it out of my garage after riding previously in the rain. Popped off the "seals" with a pick and sure enough, they filled up with rusty water. | ||

so if they are filled with rusty water - can you dry them up and fill with new grease and close the seals or it's pretty much a death sentence for the bearings? Thanks! | ||

If they are rusty you are down to emergency get you home use even with a fresh load of grease. | ||

If the bearing seizes up, it can spin the outer race in the wheel, and ruin your wheel. Much better to check bearings, and not risk having to buy a new wheel. | ||

I purchased a 3 bearing wheel from Al at American Sportbike several years ago. He installed the bearings too. I'm close to needing a new tire anyway. I've never had the wheel out of the box. Do I transfer the rotor and pulley and mount a new tire then install the wheel? Same torque values? | ||

I recently had to get the (3) rear wheel bearings out of a wheel. They were all rough. Stacking bearings this way make it impossible to re-grease. Another one of those Buell design flaws that always make me scratch my head. Al installed the bearings into a new rear wheel. Thought it would be easy enough, but they wouldn't budge. I had to take them to a HD dealer. Not sure, but I suspect Al used some sort of an adhesive. DB | ||

I have had several sets of wheel bearings (both front and rear) fail catastrophically within 80 miles of that random click. You might be able to see grease leaking out of the bad one. But I would swap ALL of them no matter what. | ||

I'm probably going to install the new 2010 wheel and keep the old wheel for a spare. Does the 2010 wheel install the same? | ||

Yep installs the same, make sure you use the black axle. | ||

Also, don't lose the tiny thin black spacer. That's the one spooky thing about the 2010 wheel kit. | ||

Good information! I'm assuming the bearings in my 09 wheel are available at NAPA, Auto Zone, etc. I might as well replace them and have a back up wheel. What part # do I need? | ||

The two bearing rear wheels use 6006-2rs bearings, a standard size. You can get them at NAPA and its ilk, but you might have to wait for them to order them in from another location. There will be no guarantee of a manufacturer, and you will be paying $30 to $60 a piece. If you want instant gratification, and bearings made by big name companies (NTN, FAG, SKF, etc.), try a bearing supply shop. They typically have them on hand for about $40 a piece. You can also get All Balls bearings for under $10 a piece, either online or maybe your local motorsport parts counter. https://www.allballsracing.com/6006-2rs.html I've used the less expensive bearings with no issue, but like a few others on this board, I prefer to re-pack them with waterproof bearing grease. I use the heated hub method for bearing installs, rather than pressing them in. There are various threads on BWB that have good info on the re-packing and the installation of bearings. UPDATE. I installed the 2010 3 bearing wheel with a new Bridgestone BT-023 tire. The drive side bearing in the old wheel was toast. All seems well. Hope to attend the WV Buell Rally. See you guy then. |
