Staple gun? Hmm. Pass. I'm one of those trigger picky folk.
I had a Chicom SKS, crude, rattled, junk sights. But the trigger was like on roller bearings, and it hit pop cans.
I can give a long winded rant on why the soda can is a perfect target. Reactive, the right size, etc. Smaller than a human heart. If you can knock down pop cans consistently, accuracy is good enough.
I was sorry to see the SKS go. Gave it to a friend who had mocked it. I'd installed a plastic stock & scout scope, & had a stack of 30 round mags. "Cheap Chinese junk!!!"
I handed it to him at the range and he proceeded to clean a rack of 6" steel plates in seconds. He just looked at it like it was an alien life form. Stunned. Handed him a bag with spare mags, & all the original parts. "It's your cheap Chinese junk now. Taking it deer hunting this fall?"
I'm inclined toward the Ruger for patriotic and reputation reasons.
I was initially very skeptical on the Taurus Spectrum, having worn & torn overmolded grips on bicycles. But handling one, the ergonomics are darn good, no sharp edges, and the overmold seemed solid.
Function wins over flash, for me.
On the SKS, the aftermarket high cap mags are more fragile than an AK's, because of the "L" shaped but in front, but work. If you leave the stock fixed magazine in, stripper clips work fine, & it's bomb proof.
The study nature of Russian designs shines through. Yes, heavier than an AKM, but without the flexible inaccuracy too.
My complaint was scope mounting. Mine had the Chinese side rail that didn't fit most Russian mounts. The dust cover mounts are crap, even the extra screw tensioner versions. The FN FAL also has this "problem" neither was designed for scopes.
The scout scope mount I had, replaced the rear sight. I still had to remove scope to clean the gas system, then replace & sight back in. A pain, but they now have a Picatinny rail to replace the rear sight, allowing quick detatch mounts with no re-zero issue.
If I build up another, I'll use the newer rail mount.
Part of the reason for the SKS ( type 56 carbine, technically ) build was to try a scout scope on a non-traditional platform. Except for weight, it fit Col Cooper's vision nearly perfectly. I just plain lucked out on the trigger, all I did was clean it and it was excellent, especially for semi auto weapons.
The scout scope is a big win in my not so humble opinion. Both eyes open, fast target acquisition, adequate range accuracy for the caliber.
The guy I gave it to has no desire to return it. He's put many rounds through it and May shoot 3 gun with it this year, "just to mess with the guys who spent $2500 on super AR guns".
It is just really amazing that some people believe those kinds of laws will make them safe and they see the NRA a evil. I honestly cannot wrap my head around it. Just supreme ignorance, being lead by even more ignorant people or is there really "Evil Empire" running this puppet show?
I purchased some OMG 10 round 22Lr magazines this week and on the back of the package had this statement on the back.
"Magazine capacity : Contact local authorities for magazine restriction areas"
WOW....I live in a place that has Constitutional Carry so it does not affect me, but OMG
I'm sure snowflakes are melting right now because I bought stuff to convert them to 16 rd capacity. Of course that probably put me on some watch list someplace.
My GF sort of gives me the stink eye because I carry. She ask why....I say while not. I tell her because I am making the choice to not be a victim, so to speak.
Her college age son came home one weekend this past semester unannounced late one night after bed time....thought it would be funny to make noise in the kitchen while mom was asleep. She hers it, gets VERY SCARED...hides in the bathroom and calls 911. Of course the police show up with Hmm...AR15's. Long story short everything was fine. I told her we should get her a pistol or a shotgun.....NO NO I would shoot someone....She has gone to the range with me a few times and shot and I would teach train her to use a weapon in the house...Anyhow...she asked me what would I do if something like that happened to me, would I call 911...I laughed...Why would I call 911?
Tell her, you understand if she feels uncomfortable carrying a gun, and uncomfortable that anyone has one. Good people save others from bad people. Or they don't ever get saved.

My more "liberal" family members ask the wife why I carry. I have the guns, and they don't do much good at home.
Hand them a 12ga with 3 1/2" super magnum turkey loads.
A pistol grip cruiser shotgun.
A .454 Casull magnum revolver with heavy bear loads.
Anything powerful with a steel butt plate.... Or that stupid ridged AR stock when she is wearing a tank top. ( bless them )
Anyone who deliberately inflicts pain on another & laughs? Should be ashamed. Stay away from women & go get therapy.
DO, give them .22 pistols or rifles and close, easy reactive targets. Shoot n see or coke cans. Dueling plates. Spinners.
Teach, encourage, work up to louder harder kicking guns. My wrists don't like bear loads in a .44 anymore, her's are half my size.
Enjoy being surprised when the waif thinks a S&W Combat Magnum is just awesome! Take pride if she can out shoot you. ( snatch the pebble! )
Anecdote....
My kid sister, all 5'3" of her, likes to spend range time with her 10/22 taking the ten ring out of her target. Iron sights, 50 meters. Round after round, same target, until the hole is clean.
Then she goes for the big teddy bear at the shoot a star booth at the Fair.
I took my female friend from Germany to a range. We started off with a 10/22 and went through the basic safety instruction. She then learned very quickly how to hit a bullseye! I then gave her a Ruger 22 bull barrel target pistol. Once again she was hitting her target. Then I pulled out a 1940 Luger action Mauser in 9mm. She took one shot and turned around with a big grin and said, "I like this one!" I told her, "that's because it's in your blood ya Nazi!"
It was Sunny who signed us both up for the Chuck Taylor defensive handgun classes. The Advanced is impressive but no pics. This is a couple shots of the intermediate in February (freaking COLD)
Pics from Chuck Taylor's Advanced courses:
quote:
2-Day Advanced Tactical Handgun Intended for those who have graduated from ASAA 4-day Defensive Handgun, 4-day Advanced Defensive Handgun or ASAA Handgun Combat MasterTM Courses, this extremely popular class is limited to only 15 students to provide maximum individual attention to each and every student. You'll spend an action-packed two days on the range and in our tactical simulators, Shooting While Moving Forward, Backwards and to the Right and Left; Engaging Multiple Assailants in both Lateral and Linear Configurations; Dealing with Hostage Situations and Small or Oddly Shaped Targets; Failures To Stop; working with Close Range Emergency Situations; learning how to correctly use Cover and Concealment. In addition, multiple high-intensity tactical simulators and low-light shooting are also emphasized. To keep your shooting, weapon-handling and tactical skills at their best, this particular course is an absolute "must" for anyone serious about self-defense handgunning.
He tries to keep the stress level as high as possible. Most exercises are timed. This image is the shooting from cover. He'd call out WHICH shape you use to engage your target(s). It gets you thinking.
Since an Assault Weapon has no real meaning except as a tool to frighten ignorant people. ( seriously, that is precisely why the term was invented. Documented Fact ) Then anything at all can be an Assault Weapon if a bureaucrat says so.
Do you know the details on your local unconstitutional violations of your Civil Rights? Is that stock on your shotgun illegal? Is that magazine you bought in 1993 a fraction of an inch too long? Is the ammo you bought to comply with Save The Condors legislation now declared cop killer?
