Hi, I have a 2008 xb12stt that seems to be having starter issues and wondering if someone had the same experience.

When I go to start it with a full battery it clicks.. if it is in gear I give it a little push or rock it back and forth and then it will start fine.

Don't know if it is a starter issue or a clutch being too tight issue. Starter is one year old and would rather not have to change it again if I don't have to..its a pain.

If I have it in neutral and try to start it it clicks until I put it in gear and rock it and then holding in the clutch it will start and will start if I slip it back to neutral at that point as well. When it does start it rocks the bike forward for just a sec..barely noticeable but moves.

Any ideas?

How old is the battery? Putting a volt meter on the battery and turning the engine over what is the voltage drop(reading)

Take battery to local harley shop for free battery test. Or batteries plus. Reading just voltage on battery isn't a complete test. You probably know this but I have to state this?

Also possible bad bendix/starter drive gear,Voltage drop test on battery positive and negative leads should be performed also condition of relay. Readjust clutch per service manual all the above before starter replacement. I finally went back to the original harley Vrod buell battery and that made a big difference

Disassemble all grounds, thoroughly clean, reassemble and test.

I would assume when you change the starter to the new one everything worked fine? When or how long did it take this problem to appear. Is it the same problem the other starter had?

Different problem than the old starter had.. battery tests out fine at shop..at idle it is like 13ish plus for voltage and I think it drops to high 10s during start. When running it and getting it home put it on tender and it greens up almost immediately, so stator and regulator are decent. Battery is one month old, starter is one year and reg is one year old. Harley battery. It took one year for starter problem to start happening.old starter just clicked and was burnt.Aftrr I do the bump in gear engine starts and fires fine, for a buell..has that one big drop of voltage and starts..like all my other buells..they always started kinda funny, like labored. I didn't know if clutch being off adjustment could cause these kind of issues. Will pull out manuals and adjust, but my clutch seems pretty dead on. Put 2 k on it this spring with no real bad shifts or pulling when clutch is in..seems like it adjusted to sweet spot and haven't touched it in a year. Sorry for formatting..mobile

Plus, does anyone have the comparable relay part number? Like how the Ford mustang fuel pumps work in ours, is there a relay I can grab at AutoZone that is the same one as the starter relay in a 2008xb? I don't think I've ever changed mine and might be a good 10 dollar insurance part. Thanks

Please let us know what the final solution is. From everything your telling us It might be a bad starter. Definitely make sure all connections are secure all voltage drop test are good. Your going to change out the relay. Last thing take the right hand side start switch button apart and make sure its clean and good. Any green stuff (corrosion) will cause a voltage drop to the relay. From what you have described the clutch adjustment is good ??

Yeah,I'll probably put a new one in. I have had the electrical Gremlins and bad grounds before and this seems to be anothrr problem all together. When ever I try to start it and it doesn't I let the clutch out and rock..pull the clutch in and it starts the very next time. 100 percent of the time(for right now), but will probably die on me. It's totally different then when I was chasing down shorts and bad grounds or a bad ecm and thought someone might have run into it before. Thanks, I'll get a new starter this week.

Will do, Thing the bendix getting bound or too weak sounds like a good trail to go down. Something about moving the gears lets it lined up and it starts...either way, time for a new one ..They are just a pain to put in, on the plus side..new gaskets and primary oil..Thanks again everyone

I had a very similar issue with my old 'O6 many moons ago and that was caused by a faulty Neutral switch.

In my case it didn't just click - it clicked repeatedly so it may not be your issue but given pulling the clutch in gets it to work I would try that before the hassle of pulling the starter motor.
