Hi folks, I am putting a new (rebuilt) motor into my '08 Uly and would appreciate some input re. order of operations to get the major pieces back together. For those of you who have taken the motor completely out and pulled off the swing-arm, would you recommend (1) first attaching the swing-arm to the motor then dropping the frame down on them, or (2) getting the swing-arm up under the frame (attached by the rear shock and a strap) them getting the motor up underneath it all and tying it all in? I've seen both in youtube videos, and the manual doesn't provide much help re. steps for re-assembly. Any input or experiences would be appreciated. I'm doing this as a one-man operation and don't have a cherry picker or strong source of roof support so I'll be shuffling these big components around best I can. Thanks in advance, DB | ||

Attach the swingarm first, install the rear wheel/belt. Make sure you either clean/grease the swingarm bearings before the install or put in new ones, they're cheap enough. Same with the wheel bearings, you've got it apart, now's the time to get it done. If you can still get them, replace the isolators (front and rear) along with the tie bars. Try St. Paul HD for the parts. Not required to replace them, just a good idea for longevity and piece of mind. Next step, set the frame back on the motor. Some of the wiring needs fed through the hole, I've found it easier to have a 2nd (and sometimes 3rd) person there to assist with dealing with the wiring. Main things to watch for is pinched wires and the transmission vent hose. Make sure nothing is resting on the rear header, a flashlight will come in handy. If you're doing this totally alone, make it as light as possible, ie; take the front end off the frame. Wheel, forks, etc. Make it manageable, so lighter weight, smaller pieces. It makes for more work, but do what you have to for making it easy. Might even be better to take the triple trees off, along with all the associated bits there and maybe replace the steering stem bearings. Again, St. Paul HD should have the parts you need if you're replacing them. | ||

Great suggestion. Thank you. Need to get a ladder set up and lighten that frame. D_Adams: 1. So you suggest getting the swing-arm attached first to the frame (or the motor)? 2. I have a 3-bearing rear wheel and have been on that for years. No sign of pitting or dryness yet, but I might as well pull some seals (and the swing-arms as well) too see what they look like. Should they be beyond re-greasing, any idea on how to go about getting those three-bearings out? |
