any of you all try, or have good luck with making your own gaskets for stuff like the primary cover? IIRC, the EOM gasket is metal. How important is it to maintain the same material? Is making a non-metal gasket and/or using paper and silicone asking for trouble? This spring is feeling like a good time to do some non-trivial opening up of the buell and changing fluids, and bearings that are reasonably accessible. | ||

To me the time it would take to make a gasket is not worth the price of buying one. Besides, I usually reuse the original gasket if it didn't get torn. You might try buying a new one and coat it with a thin layer of silicone grease like Dow Corning 111. It keeps the gasket stuck in position during assembly and it will just peal off the next time so you can reuse it. I've been doing this for years on cars, bikes and all kinds of industrial equipment with no ill effects. | ||

Agree on both points above - not worth the time to save the...what...$17? And, with careful use (no tears, no bends/creases) you can reuse them. How often do you have the primary off anyway? Mine's been off once, when I swapped to XB9 gearing. Getting ready to take it off again, to go back to stock - I miss my low RPM highway cruising. 35k miles, haven't had to have the primary off for anything other than this mod. If you're talking about the inspection covers...they're like $5 a set and DEFINITELY re-usable if you don't damage them. I coat ONE side with Hylomar so it stays in place (no chance of a bend or a kink that way!) and it's as good as an o-ring seal that way. I won't worry about homemade stuff until the OEMs simply aren't out there...and the aftermarket inexplicably stops making Evo Sportster stuff...which, by current industry trends looking at other old bikes, should be somewhere around 2109. And by then, restoration houses will be making them for us  |
