On a ride this morning, my bike shut down, like it ran out of gas. Everything works, but I don't hear the fuel pump. The pump has been making a growling noise for years but that noise stopped after 3 or 4 seconds. When I turn on the ignition the red light goes off in a few seconds. The starter spins the engine. Thoughts? | ||

First quick check might be to take the fuel line loose, put on a short piece of fuel line, and turn the ign and stop/run switch on, and see if you get fuel. If the pump is working, it should spray out. Use caution, don't do it inside . . . If no fuel, next check would be to confirm power to the pump. And the first first check is to confirm fuel in the tank. Don't ask how I know about that one. Hope this helps, Dave | ||

Thanks guys. I checked the fuses before I pushed it a half of mile home. Will check to see if the pump puts out fuel and power to the pump after my 65 year old body recovers from pushing bike home AND it quits raining so I can take it outside. Oh, tank is 3/4 full. Before you replace the pump, check your side stand switch. Not sure whether that would allow the engine to crank if it was acting up. Just something to check before dropping a couple of bills on a fuel pump. | ||

Will do. Of I remember right, engine won't turn over if stand is down. | ||

just squirt some starting fluid in the throttle body as a test. if it fires, fuel pump is bad or filter clogged. | ||

I followed your advise and also followed the troubleshooting sections of my Buell Service Manual. It's the dang fuel pump! I ordered this. Anyone have any experience with this? A new Buell OEM pump assembly would have been $400 with shipping.  | ||

seems like the factory pumps are failing early so i'd try something cheaper like the one i bought. | ||

Interesting that it says it fits XB. I didn't think XB pumps would work in a tuber. It's just a pump though, so I guess as long as it flows the right amount at the right pressure, and it fits in the tank, it should be OK. Let us know how it goes. | ||

No idea. I would imagine it would have to be slightly higher than the regulator it sits behind, which I believe is somewhere around ~50 PSI. | ||

Buell service manual says set pressure is 49 psi, 46-53 psi range for pump. The pump I bought says direct replacement and equals OEM flow/pressure. I'm wondering if I should install new regulator or save it for a spare? New pump comes Thursday. I'll post pics and results after installation. | ||

That is the one I would get. When I go to the auto parts store for something, they will have stuff listed from, say, $20-$50. I generally go for the $40ish ones, for quality. Given the work required to replace one, I would stay away from the $25 stuff. And if you go to the highflow.com website, I believe they offer a warranty. Hope this helps, Dave | ||

I didn't replace the regulator. Service manual says it's held in place by two screws. No pics.- and already installed. The two seals (they look like rubber washers), one for fuel outlet and one for electrical wires were a wee bit messed up. I cut some new ones from a sheet of gasket material and used some Permatex® PermaShield™ Fuel Resistant Gasket Dressing & Flange Sealant. Going to let it sit overnight and add fuel in the morning. Wish me luck on no leaks. | ||

No leaks. But it tries to start about 4 or 5 fires then dies. Took fuel line loose between filter and tank and gas is coming out from pump but it's only squirting out a couple of inches. Wondering if the pump is strong enough or I should have used the new regulator. Going to check the filter next. Suggestions? (Message edited by X1carbon on March 30, 2018) | ||

Disregard above post. All is fine now. Maybe I flooded it turning the key on and off before I tried to start it. Running great now! Thanks all for the advise. | ||
