I was out riding my s1w today and noticed the rubber line that runs from the hard line on the forward cylinder into the filter had vibrated off and fell onto the road somewhere. So now it’s starting to splatter onto the frame and cam cover. Besides converting to XB covers and all that jazz, is there a better solution? Maybe I can find another fitting and hose to try to replace it. |

If it is the line i think you are talking about I believe it is just fuel line so it should be easy to replace. Or did you also lose the hard aluminum line? |

Mine is an older one, so it had a threaded fitting to the aluminum pipe that had a rubber hose pressed on it . |

I see they have a hardware kit that replaces everything for the breathers for $75. May have to go that route. |

Ditch all the pipework and get two elbow pieces with length of oil hose that go to the ground or into a catch can (depending on how much condensation and oil it spits) |

Or look for a crossroads devenator. I had one before I wentvto XB rockers. Worked good.

Hammer performance has this “horseshoe” kit for $30, that may be the way to go also.

I have the style Brother_in_buells posted a link to, very simple and work well. There's been ongoing debate since I got on this forum about whether the connected pipe fitting are good or not, because it forces one of the breathers to push the oil/sludge upwards. I've never had one so I've never put any effort into determining if it's really a problem. It's easier just to use the 90 degree fittings, connect them with a T fitting, and run the hose down to the bottom of the motor. |

I blocked mine off with SS bolts from the hardware store, put the XB rocker covers on, and ran the PCV valves to a catch can. Much cleaner and no more oil residue anywhere |

Has anyone ever tried to convert the original buell sportster rocker covers to the breathing out of the top like the xb covers? There isn't much room ,but maybe it is doable!? |

Yeah it’s a pretty common mod. I did it to my S3. I have a step by step tutorial on pdf if you’re interested. You remove the middle spacer and put on the XB covers/pcv’s. Put bolts in the breather holes on the heads. Super easy. It’s a little pricey unless you can get a deal on some used covers on eBay. I did, then had $50 in powder coating them black. The bolts (chrome hex socket) are $20. You could use some $5 ones from Ace though. |

Accept hecwants to know if anyone modded the stock covers not replaced them. |

"Has anyone ever tried to convert the original buell sportster rocker covers to the breathing out of the top like the xb covers? " The xb covers are curved with a specific flat spot where the valves fit. The tuber covers have two elevated strips across them. I picture you having a hard time getting a good flat surface for the valves to sit properly. It might be possible with some machine work, I'm not sure how much material is there that could be shaved off. Either way I think if you go that route you're looking at way more work, and not really saving any money(unless you have access to a shop to do the machining yourself. |

I know what is involved with the xb rocker covers and have them for one of my tubers ,but was sort of thinking out loud. I can do the work myself so that's no problem ,but finding a pcv that is low enough to fit in between the engine and fuel tank is! |

People have even tried to find PCV valves from other automobiles just as a cheaper alternative to the Buell part, and I haven't seen anyone on the forum manage to find anything. Also not 100% sure if the rubber gasket in the rocker cover is available on it's own or if it's sold as part of the cover. I only have my S1 parts manual so I'm not sure how it's listed for the XBs. |

The rubber gasket called grommet is separated listed in the xb parts book. It's probably also a ford part! The xb pcv valves are a one of a kind part ,because never seen or read about an alternative either. |

I believe the pcv valve is a ford part. Somewhere there is a list of parts needed to do this conversion and the valves were ford. |

Those "above the breather bolt" breathers are crap. Let me tell you why. Any fluid that makes its way to the breather bolt hole has run down hill from the umbrella valve. The uphill run into the crossover pipe creates a P trap at the breather hole of each head. The breather should run down hill all the way to a catch can. If you want to have vacuum on the end of the breather, which is actually a good idea, you can either run a vent from the catch can back to the air box where the stock vent is located, or put a T in there somewhere to get the gases back to the intake while letting the liquid drain to the can. Put a PCV valve on the end of the vent hose so that instead of simply pulsing with the up and down motion of the pistons, you get some semblance of one-way air movement. Having a vacuum in the crankcase helps to seal the rings. |

I agree hoot. I was pondering that when I saw the “horseshoe”. But hammer usually knows their stuff and HD has an “official” one - Part #29281-91T. So my general engine knowledge was being swayed lol. |

Totally what Hoot said. The "up" style have a tenancy to "burp" spooge. |

Another concept that works is routing directly to the intake.
