Stupid? No. Ignorant of any real facts about firearms? Absolutely. Guns, cars, motorcycles, airplanes, you can bet the only thing they know is what's handed out by their bosses. ( or approved sources, like Bloomberg ) Dishonest? Yes. It may just be repeated propaganda or deliberate lies. "At this point, what difference does it make? ". I suspect the deputies were following protocol. From their boss. The guy who quit probably saw he was going to be sacrificed for the Sheriff's cya. I know the proper move in an active shoot is to move fast & deadly to reduce further casualties. But that is risky. The deputies probably have little training. And old protocols call for law enforcement to stand back, call for back up, and wait for the boss or negotiating guy to show up and make contact. It's a plan for domestic violence, where mommy is dead or wounded and meth'ed up boyfriend is holding her kids hostage. The difference between hostage negotiation plan and stop the ongoing massacre is stark. Either one is dead wrong for the other situation. Many departments don't even have a fast stop plan. & their lawyers don't like that kind of plan. They can't win in the court of misinformed public opinion either way. My first take is fire the Sheriff. Not the deputies. | ||

A total of 4 Broward County Sheriffs does start to look like protocol not cowardice. Have seen a couple of videos today that make Israel look really bad. watching  where's the popcorn??? | ||

That deputy retired. From the descriptions of his actions that day he had probably gone ROAD long ago. Retired on active duty. I thought of the line in Heartbreak Ridge as soon as I heard about him standing around out front instead of going in. Shame that big coach wasn't packing. He had the courage deputy armed and worthless didn't. | ||

You may well be right, in which case protocol should be re-examined and altered if appropriate. I can imagine ROAD personnel are intentionally selected for school resource officer duty. In other situations, you probably want someone that's experienced, not in a hurry to take overt action, not easily rattled by smart ass kids, etc. Again, if true, this is another thing that should be critically examined and changed if appropriate. It is interesting how quickly the sheriff threw this guy under the bus. Sure looks like a total CYA. | ||
