I see Erik's RW750 is going up for auction next month along with a bunch of the racing EBRs. Did LAP get the RW750 as part of the EBR purchase? |

Thanks for this detail Buelliedan, I posed a similar question in the classified section a week or so ago. With all the factory looking race bikes it looked like either Erik, LAP or someone with some close factory ties was selling. Cheers, Rick |

If Erik is selling the RW750 that is really sad IMO. |

I don't believe that's the same bike that was in the East Troy offices. It's a different paint color scheme. (Message edited by snacktoast on December 26, 2017) |

Are there more than 2? Here's the bike coming up for auction: https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0118-315566/1984-buell-production-1-rw-750/ Is that a representative photo, or just the photo chopped off the Buell history picture? These are the two that I'm aware of. Both were in that condition in 2015. http://motorcycle.com.vsassets.com/blog/wp-content /uploads/2014/11/111014-trizzle-henry-duga-erik-bu ell-rw750.jpg and https://www.motorcyclistonline.com/sites/motorcycl istonline.com/files/styles/1000_1x_/public/import/ page_element_images/1983BuellRW750.jpg?itok=zV_onw G0 (Message edited by snacktoast on December 26, 2017) (Message edited by snacktoast on December 26, 2017) |

Dave Gess posted this on Facebook regarding the bike at auction (here is the link with the pictures he mentions) https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0118-315566/1984-buell-production-1-rw-750/
quote:There are only two of those, The one in the first picture was the bike we photographed for the press releases (that looks like one of the those photos not a shot of any current bike, every little detail I can see is the same, tire marking sin same spot etc. the reflections in the bubble don't look quite right but if it not one of the PR shots it is a very careful copy on a reshoot.) and I am a little unclear on the exact history of that bike. I think Erik raced it for one season of AMA F1 before he managed to sell one bike. One complete bike was sold to the Machinists Union and raced in the AMA F1 class. The Machinist Union bike was purchased, not sure if by Erik or EBR, I hope it was Erik, and was in the EBR offices unrestored. There was a third bike put together from pieces found in the barn and given to Erik as a present, I think the Mama Tried bike is that one. It has an 850 motor that was sold to a SCCA racer as a spare for his D-Sport Racer car. I don't think it has many, if any hours on it. The staff of BMC dug around and contacted a lot of people to get correct period decals, tech inspection stickers and the original decals (the guy who made this is still in business) and generally did a great job and brought a few tear to Erik's eyes. All together a great piece of history and I hope ig goes for the know of money out deserves, high 5 figures is not more.

I certainly wouldn't blame Erik (with a k) if he did decide to unload any motorcycle that he owns. They are his to do with what he pleases. Auctioning it for the biggest gain would be desirable in that situation. Thing is, I don't believe any of these bikes up for auction are Erik's... I'm certain Erik would know that the displacement of an XBRR is NOT 750 CC... I'm certain Erik knows that the EBR streetfighter model was not an 1190 XS... The text of the ad for the RW 750 mentions "The first production machine was sold to the Machinists Union Racing Team." So, based on this note, this would be the blue RW 750, not "Erik's" (i.e. the Momma Tried bike). Read the 'highlights' and descriptions of the auctions for all of the other 'historically significant Buells' (EBR appears to not be an option for brand with Mecum, so Buells they are...) and it all appears to be the same old shuck and jive to turn a quick buck - or in this case a (hoped) LOTTA quick bucks - that is becoming synonymous with a certain liquidation company. I had my suspicions when I first saw these auctions pop up, and they were pretty much confirmed by a little birdie (NOT Erik, but someone who would have a helluva lot better idea than little old me...) I met in East Troy last week. It was also mentioned that Erik still had the 'Momma Tried' RW 750 in his possession as of ~mid-November. Correlate that with the last date that Erik Buell's profile on LinkedIn shows as being affiliated with EBR and it's pretty amazing what you can find in (pretty much) the public domain... The above is just what I've deduced...But I still hope that they are Erik's and that if they are his that they sell for eleventy brazilian US dollars a piece... But we won't know for certain until either some up to date pictures are put up or the sellers name comes to light... |

The mystery continues! I have a feeling LAP acquired one of the RW750s in the EBR auction and now they are unloading them. I sure hope it goes to a good home. It really should be donated to the Barber museum but LAP does not seem to be the kind of folks who would do something good like that. |

The description on the Mecum site changed...possibly today. Here's how it now reads: "HIGHLIGHTS Sold on Bill of Sale Can only be purchased by Non-Nevada Resident or Non-Nevada Dealer 1984 BUELL RW750 Production Racer First Production bike built and sold by Buell Rare museum piece The very first production Buell, this machine is Erik Buell’s initial motorcycle offered for public sale. A replica of his own racing machine, this is the motorcycle that launched Buell’s career in motorcycle manufacturing, leading to worldwide fame, a partnership with Harley-Davidson and the distinction of being the only man to build American sport bikes. Buell started in motocross and transitioned to road racing by his early 20s. He graduated from club racing to racing a 2-stroke Yamaha TZ in the AMA Formula One series and a Ducati twin in the Superbike series. Buell also continued his studies, earning an engineering degree at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1979, he landed a chassis design job at Harley-Davidson, where he rode the bikes far beyond their normal track limits, implementing an electronic chassis-testing regime that was state-of-the-art and helped greatly improve handling characteristics. In the early 1980s, he rode the product of a small British company, Barton Engineering, who built a 2-stroke square-4 750 that fit the AMA Formula One rules. The Barton engine was poorly built and the chassis handled badly, so he re-engineered the motor and created a wholly new chassis, making a wicked fast—178 MPH clocked at Talladega—but unrefined machine. During this development process Barton went out of business, so Buell purchased their remaining stock to build a series of replicas, which he dubbed the RW750, the first of which you see here. He offered them for $17,000—about half the price of a comparable Honda F1 racer. The first production machine was sold to the Machinists Union Racing Team. The AMU tested and raced this bike, known as RW750 No. 2, and rated it very highly in the press of the day. This 1984 Buell RW750 is an incredibly historic machine, worthy of a museum. It’s the first production bike from a Buell, an American icon and AMA Hall of Famer for his chassis design and years as a motorcycle manufacturer in his own right. There is no other first No. 1 for Buell—this is the bike." |

Interesting that Hemmings says: "UPDATE (8.October 2018): The Buell RW750 failed to meet its reserve and was not sold." But Bonham's says: "Sold for US$ 60,000 inc. premium" Wonder who's got the correct intel...and the bike?? |

Wonder who's got the correct intel...and the bike?? Pure speculation on my part from the minimal info I have... Shortly after the auction took place, I went to see the results on Bonham's website. Other lots had been listed as sold and had selling prices listed, but the RW did not. But now it clearly lists a selling price, including premium. So, my assumption is that it didn't sell during the auction, but sold afterwards. My hope is that it sold to George Barber and will be going into his museum - where it definitely belongs. It's a real shame that the liquidation company didn't sell it for $110,000 in Vegas, but did sell it for $60,000 in Alabama. Or was it just another liquidation to them? Again, all of this is pure speculation - with some hope thrown in for good measure (and some sarcasm as an added bonus)! |
