Gonna be shopping for luggage in the next couple weeks and wanted to put this out there. I have had the factory setup and liked it a lot, but am open to other possibilities. Also, if anyone has a set collecting dust, give me a shout. Ideas? |

I believe you can still get OEM brackets from the manufacturer. Won't be cheap though. And you can get the stock bags, without the Buell logo though. Again, not cheap. |

Happy-Trail is still offering Ulysses bags/racks, now with a price reduction - though still pricey. They are well made, I have a set on mine - this is the 4th bike for the same bags, I re-constructed the racks from a KLR that I had before. http://www.happy-trail.com

Slash- I thought about the HT luggage. From the pic, it looks like there is zero room for a passenger to use their pegs. Is that accurate? |

It would depend on the size of the bags and where you position them. I don't carry a passenger so I put them as far forward as possible for weight distribution. |

If I had to start from zero, I would get the racks from Hepco and get something other than the stock journeys. I have had zero problems with my stock journeys but that's only because people on this forum warned about the fragile latches. It all costs huge money though. I went with the Juniors from Hepco Becker... they're slightly smaller (42 vs 40 liters) but much more useable with better latches. Plus if you run in the city much you can get 30 liter bags that are much narrower. If that doesn't do it for you HB aluminum panniers will mount on the same racks. Pricey yes, but really nice and bulletproof. You do need to relocate the turn signals aft for clearance or try to source the AU turn signal mounts.. |

I'm new here—just picked up a clean '09 X and am looking for luggage for it. The MotoMachines-supplied Hepco stuff seems to be the way to go, although a three-bag setup is pricey. I've also looked at the Happy Trails setup, partly because then I could do pretty much whatever I want with other cases, especially with the topcase. "Cheaper," too. Slash6, are those the Owyhee cases? 9" Woodnbow, do your Juniors mount backwards? |

I have the Hepco-Becker Journey's, that came with my bike. They have worked OK, but I've heard that the latches break, easily, and they leak if you are in a lot of rain. I haven't had these problems, but they have been reported on this forum. Other options might be better... (?) |

Don't use the latch to pull the lid closed. If you do break one, carry a bungee cord - you can easily strap the broken lid handle to either the triple tail handgrip, or across the seat to the other saddlebag handle, to get home with a closed bag. |

Sorry Surj... I bought the proper mounts from New Castle HD. I don't recall the part numbers but you need the XP model (Look for AU at the end of each number) and then you also relocate your turn signals, those parts were all available when I did mine and it works perfectly. Buell fubared us when they reversed the mounts on the HB bags. IMO.. |

The bag-to-bike latches haven't been the issue, historically. The issue has been the plastic lid latches, when you use them to tug the lid shut they can break. Trick is, close the lid completely by hand FIRST, and once you have done that, you can use the latch to secure it. I was on Touratech's site recently and they still show the Buell as an option - but you have to have racks on the bike already. You have to go to their "individual pannier" page, not the "luggage system" page. The TT bags use a quasi-universal clamp/latch setup that can attach to the factory Buell/HB racks, and they offer 31, 38, and 45 liter sizes. Not cheap...but fairly bomb-proof. Actually...since the tab was still open on my computer I was digging a bit more. They still offer their Ulysses rack system as well. If you have a bare Ulysses...you can still outfit yourself with some Touratech bags, looks like they have everything. We've gotten a number of GS-A's on trade in the last season and the TT stuff is pretty much their standard - high quality stuff, and like I said - literally, bomb-proof. |
