Latest project underway. Picked up this 2002 X1W a couple months ago. Swapped exhaust to D & D full system. Hammer performance air cleaner. Replaced bars and grips. Extended tube style swingarm. Powder coated wheels and arm. Added Shinko tires front & rear. Pingle strut. Chain conversion. Fixing to add shift light and teather kill switch. Will be running stock drivetrain - for now. Looking to go to the track with it in two weeks.

Well, made it to the track this weekend. First time out on this X1W. Things went just as I expected. First run on the bike I went 12:38. I hit the rev limiter in first gear and ran a little conservative overall just trying to be observant of everything going on with the bike since I had never run it before (before or after the mod's). Ran fine. Everything was smooth. No issues. So, second run I let it rip and surprisingly went 11:58. After those two runs I made a total of six more passes and all were in the 11;74 to 11:99 range. I'm very happy with the way the bike performed. If the rider can improve on 60 foot times and hitting shift points properly I'd be even happier. Hahaha! Here are a few pictures of the bike as it sit now in it's completed state.

How are you making out with the strut and no wheelie bar. I'm building a very similar bike with 12 " stretch. I wanted to keep some suspension in the rear to give it good smooth weight transfer on launch. I built an adjustable front shock mount and lowered it a bunch. very little clearance now on the shock and with the stretch I had to adjust the spring up so much that I'm not getting the movement I want. Simple solution is a strut. With a bit more fab work I can install a 12 in Ohlins shock from a Ducati Kind of XB style. I haven't run this bike yet and I want it mostly for a fun second bike at the track for my crew and kid to bracket race between rounds. I want it to be any easy ride for that purpose and wonder how the strut will work. I see lots of buells at the track with struts and they seem to be OK. Any thoughts?? I'll post a picture when I get back home. |

Strut seems to work fine for me. I've had three Buells that I've run 1/4 mile and I've run struts on all three. I thought about running a shock on this X1 for the same reasons you mentioned. The problem I had was that I wanted the bike low and I have no real fab skills....... So, I went with the simple strut option. I would like to one day try the shock set up out. Let us know what direction you end up going with yours. |

I'm pretty sure I'm going to do the shock. It's a fairly easy mod and then gives me a lot of flexibility for tuning at the launch. I also feel it will tame the bike a bit for inexperienced riders. I want it low as well for various reason and this will give that ability. I also changed the forks to a set of Roma forks from an older S2. they have no taper on the upper tubes and allow adjustment in the triple trees to any height. I want to keep the geometry and trail correct on the front by lowering equally front and back. The bike is a S3 but I put S1 body on it and fabbed a stretched tail. It's a pretty cool looking fuel injected S1... I'll keep you posted. P.S. I was at the Rock last fall as a spectator but next season will likely run a few AMRA races with the P/S bike. Then I'll still have the Buell here at home to play with on the local tracks |

poor quality pics but you get the idea. Fuel injected S1... really a S3 with S1 body

It is pretty close but still has about an inch of clearance with a 180 tire. I might have to change it once I try it but I don't think a street tire will expand that much. A result of giving the welding shop my idea and dimensions but not a drawing. I may have to change that brace anyway when I mount the upright shock in there. If we didn't have 2 friggin feet of snow right now I could take it out on the driveway and try a big burn-out. |

Nice work. Most folks don't appreciate how difficult it really is to achieve an error-free quarter mile. The Nallin brothers sure set the standard for the stock Buells back in the day. If you get a chance, contact Brian Nallin. I'm sure he'd be happy to share his experience. Multiple national and world records. He's good people. Tell him Blake sent you. |

I want to sort out my M2 with a fully functioning rear shock also, I went to Sonoma over the weekend and my tire bottomed out on my fender/seat |
