I've got a 96 S2T that I bought used and it has this HUGE Vance & Hines stainless exhaust system. My problem is that it keeps breaking the tabs. I have the newer exhaust mount and it has helped cut down on the breakage, but hasn’t stopped it. I'm looking for a new exhaust but it seams like no one makes anything for the S2's I really like the BUBs dual exhaust, but they don't make it for my bike. I was thinking of just getting some exhaust shop to bend me some pipes then putting some baffles in them or just finding a stock header off of ebay and a slip on. Any other suggestions or helpful hints? |

Chewy, unless someone put a Buell race header on your bike everything else is just slip-ons,you can always find tons of those,V&H,D&D,Buell,Supertrapp, look on E-bay.Only real full systems were Kooks and that loud system Reg used to run(cannot remember name--) I have used,D&D,Supertrapp and Buell race system all with good luck. |

The diameter of the header pipe is visibly larger than the stock pipe and the bends are a little different. The muffler goes from the front of the engine all the way back to the rear tire. I'll post a photo when I get home today. |

Here we go, see the welds in the close up? only one of the close ups came out. I'll try again later. Right now I'm going to go for a ride. |

Chewy; what is the diameter of the collector - where the headers join and run into the pipe itself. On the newer ('98 and later) headers, the collector pipe is 2 1/2", and those headers will fit an S2. In your picture the weld on the rear header looks much cleaner than the ones on my stock '96 S2 header. Henrik |

That's not the stock header. The stock S2 header has the elbow on it, to take the exhaust around the corner toward the back, as does the race header. That system has the elbow on the muffler inlet tube. It's a header for the later tubers, most likely a thunderstorm header (2-1/2" collector), as the heads have been swapped to Thunderstorms. |

Here is the list given to me by the former owner. Thunderstorm heads and cams, 10:1 compression pistons, Buell Race ignition, Vance & Hines full exhaust, 44mm carb off of some big twin. This is my first American bike and it has been a love hate relationship. It does have an odd problem that no one can explain. When taking off from a stop or when rolling on the throttle from cursing between around 2800 rpm and 3700 rpm it sputters and coughs like it's running out of gas. This doesn’t happen when the bike is sitting still and you are just revving it up. I've checked the accelerator pump and it has a good solid stream. I was thinking that maybe the main jet was too small since it happens at full throttle, but then wouldn’t it do the same thing sitting still? The Hardly-a-dealer has no idea and I'm thinking of taking a friends advice on buying a "Super G" carb from S&S, he seams to think that will solve my problems. Any Ideas?

Chewy; overall it sounds like you have a very nice set-up there. You may just need to get things dialed in. Where are you located It may be that you're whacking the throttle open too soon or too fast for the RPM - that will bog the motor. It depends on your set-up - but others, like Aaron is much better informed to give you an opinion on the details. S&S makes nice stuff, but their carbs were initially designed for drag racing applications. Not many are running them on a Buell - I suspect you'd be disappointed. Henrik |

V&H never offered full systems for these things that I'm aware of, just slip-on mufflers. Like I said, it looks like a stock header from a 98 t-storm motor to me. And that doesn't look like a V&H muffler from what little I can see of it. There are lots of good slip-ons available for that header, assuming it's what I think it is. Measure the collector outside diameter, right before the muffler connection. If it's 2-1/2", shop for any muffler made for a 1998 S1W or S3 or S3T. Avoid the 99 and newer ones, even though they're 2-1/2" the mounting tab is in a different place and it stresses things to bolt them up. If it's 2", shop for any muffler made for a 96-98 S1, 97-98 M2, or 97 S3 or S3T. I'm not going to bash anyone's product here, but personally I'd sure go that way instead of the Bub's 2 into 2. Ditto the carb. Sounds like the bike needs a good tune-up, but if you want to change the carb, personally I'd go with the Mikuni 42. Nice flat a/f curves, no problematic transitions between circuits, easy to tune, and great throttle response.

Don't know anyone in the immediate Virginia Beach area ... but Pammy, the Queen of the Universe, and Wes is just a hop south in Fl. Henrik |

Chewy, an air leak between intake manifold and head/s would give symptoms like you describe. |

thanks Kevyn, but i don't possess anywhere near the technical savvy as Aaron or Henrik (or most anyone else around here, for that matter). i do have experience with leaking intake seals, tho (the results can be mechanically grim), and a classic symptom of an extremely lean Buell is the engine "hiccuping" under load such as Chewy describes. |

Thanks for all the info guys. It measures in at 2 1/2 inches so I will take a look at those slip-on's offered. Here are some more photos of the exhaust. I just realized that my digital camera doesn’t have macro so I can’t get any close up photos of the welds.

Chewy, As others have suggested, that's a '98 S3T or S1W exhaust header. Additionally, with the exception of the tail pipe, that muffler looks exactly like the stock unit I removed from my '98 S3T. Are there any signs of it's having been cut open, gutted and rewelded? What's the sound level like? I've used a couple of different mufflers on my S3T that would work with that header. The bike currently wears a D&D megaphone that works well and looks great (showing my age: love reverse cone megs). Though it's a little loud for my taste on a street/touring bike, it might be right up someone else's alley. They're available regularly on e-bay for a reasonable sum from a guy who must have bought a gross of new-old-stock. good luck, Lornce |
