Getting a check engine light Anybody aware of anyplace/anybody in the Elmira - Corning - Binghamton area able to read the code? Performance HD in Syracuse is the nearest place that I am aware of. Against the possibility that the problem is serious hesitate to ride 110 miles Thank you |

It is perfectly safe to ride with a dead actuator, you may just notice a power loss under some conditions as the valve in the muffler can't open/close to divert the exhaust flow. The easiest fixes are to either replace the actuator (expensive), or disable the functionality in the ECM. |

99savage Posted on Sunday, September 17, 2017 - Got a "Code 21" - Interactive Muffler Control Safe to ride with a gimpy Interactive Muffler Control? Should be fine for around town riding. The engine might run hotter if riding at high speeds for long periods of time. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/151735.jpg |

If you ever remove the air box cover and watch the IMC you will notice it doesn't open very often. Unless you're riding WOT you most likely won't even notice. If yours is held together with screws then it's an old style with plastic gears. Go get a new one held together with rivets. They have steel gears. Don't try to rotate the actuator by hand. Remove it to pull off the cable and make sure the cable isn't froze up and that the muffler valve is also free. |

Thanks again Has anybody even taken apart an actuator? This assumes that the actuator is the problem |

Has anybody even taken apart an actuator? This assumes that the actuator is the problem Yes. I attempted to fix mine without success. I'm sure you can find pics of the innards with a little googling. I think replacement is the only viable option. |

Get a new one from Lance at St. Paul Buell/HD: https://st-paul-harley-davidson-buell.myshopify.co m/products/s1138-1aa-new-buell-exhaust-actuator-mo st-xb12-models-b2-h Pricey at $185, but replace it and forget it. It'll be hit or miss to get a good one off of eBay. 95% of those listed probably are the plastic geared variety and either are broken or will break shortly. |

I had one replaced under warranty but had to buy the next one. They already had the new "steel gear" type but gave me old stock and it lasted 2 weeks. The dealer would not stand behind it so I called Buell and they took care of it getting me the new style. No problems since. As Hugh said, bite the bullet and forget about it. |

Miracle, it healed itself Shot some silicone down the cable & under the cable pulley, and been shooting penetrating oil in the general direction of where I think the shaft of the muffler valve is, all of which might or might not have anything to do with the miracle Probably be next year before I replace the actuator Thanks all |

IIRC, the mechanism has a spring inside to help protect the gears if the cable gets frozen. It's possible your actuator is fine; the cable was just stuck. I had to replace my cable earlier this year. |

There's a test sequence you can do to watch the actuator cycle. I think you turn the key on and off 3 times or something like that. With the air cleaner cover off you can watch it cycle. It might be a frayed cable. |

Flip the kill switch to off. Turn on your key. Hold the throttle wide open and flip the kill switch to on. Unit will cycle. |
