So, here I am last week, 4000 miles into a 10 day 5500 mile trip, somewhere in Utah/northern Arizona and my 06 uly (with 60K miles) has a split second stutter with no needles bouncing or CEL. I think, "that's weird" but whatever, it happens a few more times over the course of the day but really doesn't get worse and seems to happen for no rhyme or reason. Yes it was hot, I was climbing inclines and going downhill, doing 70-80 mph and yes it was windy. It would happen sometimes after 50 miles of riding, sometimes after 10 miles of riding. Fuel level didn't seem to have an effect either. But it never lasted more than a split second.

Then towards the end of the day it gets real and it starts to really stutter and backfire a couple times over maybe a 10 second period then it clears up and its right as rain. 30 miles later it goes into this loop again but this time the engine dies and I actually have a CEL. I plug in my buelltooth and open the app on my phone and I have a code for "BAS too high" and (I believe) "TPS idle too low". I turn off the ignition and turn it back on and the codes are gone without me erasing them.

I figure I haven't done a TPS reset in 10k or so, so I do it on the side of the road there and it is all gravy the last 100 miles into flagstaff. Then I am sitting at a stop light 5 miles from the hotel and the engine dies. I thumb the starter and it just cranks. I walk it to the side of the road (the light changed), cycle the ignition and it fires up no problem, runs fine the next 5 miles til I am damn near within walking distance of the hotel and it starts sputtering/backfiring again.

I get checked in and proceed to pull apart every electrical connection I can get to, and clean contacts and check continuity. I found nothing obvious or out of sorts. By the time I get everything buttoned back up its 10pm, dark, and probably 15 degrees cooler. I throw my leg over it and buzz down I-17 40 miles and back to the hotel, eighty miles round trip with not a problem.

The next morning I call the local harley dealer and he says he has a BAS so I buzz over there to pick it up for piece of mind. Long story short the parts guy is an idiot and does not have a BAS and the closest dealer that does is in California somewhere (or Lance in MN). I figure i'll be fine and head back east for a (hopefully) uneventful 1200 mile blast home to KC @ 80mph.

I don't even make the 10 or some miles back to flagstaff proper when it starts sputtering/backfiring, I pull off at the next exit and there is a penske rental truck place at the bottom of the hill. I say "f*ck it" and get a truck, the guy gives me a pretty good discount and my MC insurance has a $500 "trip interruption" clause, which should help with some of the f*cking my pocket book is taking.

So I call lance and order up the BAS, a new ignition coil (never know?), and pull my fuel pump rebuild kit off the shelf.

While I am waiting on parts can anybody think of anything else I must be missing? a couple years back, after I bought the bike, I pulled the fuel pump to check for wire chaffing and found none, but still went ahead and added heat shrink. The pump never seemed to make any goofy sounds and primed just fine before each startup. I plan on pulling the timing cover and heating up the CPS to see if that's the issue too. I'll also check/clean all the grounds (again) and do a load test on the 1 year old yuasa agm.

The crazy intermittent nature is what is messing me.

Thanks for any insight

When my ECM was going bad, my Uly had a variety of intermittent symptoms. For a long time it did not store a code, but eventually it stored code 53 (ROM failure)- replace ECM.

Have you done a ECM relocate or supported the seat in some way?

I would suggest ECM as well. I checked CPS, plug wires, and a multitude of other things. Look at the connections into the ECM and examine for any cracking. I think that might be your problem. Also, take the seat off and start it in your driveway. Then give it a good tap with the handle of a screw driver or something similar. My bike would stutter and stall when I hit the ECM. Replacement cured all of my previous issues.

My ecm had the recall spacer added by the prior owner, and I did try wiggling wires at the plugs, but I will try the screwdriver trick.

It is a "race only" ecm so I know its not original, but beyond that is anyone's guess.

They will develop a crack in the casing where the plugs enter the ECM body (mostly invisible unless you are looking for it). Internally, this stresses the solder joints and causes them to fail, causing intermittent BS like what you are describing. Search for ECM RELOCATION and this should point you in the right direction.

Was the BAS (relocation) recall done on your bike?
If not and you have ECM spy you can turn the BAS off. (for testing)

BAS relocation has been done, I tried to turn it off in ECMdroid, as there is an option to do so, but it give me an error "cant write to eprom" or something like that.

I will try to do turn it off with the cable and laptop using actual ecmspy as part of my troubleshooting.

13 hr night shifts all week so it will probably be sunday or monday before I can tear into stuff and most of my stuff from lance probably won't be here until next week anyway

Bike will run if you disconnect the BAS, IIRC. You'll get a steady CEL. They DO wear out, the pendulum inside wears into the case until the pendulum gets stuck, in my case it stuck just far enough to shut down the system.

Sounds like the ECM to me too though, but you might disconnect the BAS to see. At least that's what my fuzzy memory is telling me...
