Last year my S3 occasionally wouldn't start when cold - it would crank but not fire. It was so short lived that a couple of quick attempts and it would start and run fine so I chalked it up to cold fueling that wasn't quite right since I installed a 1250 kit with N6 cams, but had not yet dyno or ECMSpy tuned the "race" ECM. In July I went on an annual 3 day ride with friends from work. Things started out ok, but I noticed hot restarts were not instantaneous, but not too drawn out either. On the hottest day we arrived at our hotel, parked the bikes and checked in. When I went to restart to move closer to the room, it would again crank but no start sputter or anything. Looked at, wiggled, checked as many electrical connections as I could, turned the key on and off repeatedly, but nothing. Went for a swim and an hour later it started fine and I moved it closer to the room. !/2 hour later we wanted to go for a local ride and it started, but again cranked some before firing. I was too hot and didn't think to listen for the fuel pump during the extended hot - no start and everybody else was already already running when I had the delayed start before our ride so it was too loud to listen for it. After the fact, I don't think it was getting fuel during the extended no start as I definitely did not get any flooded fuel smell like you should get after several minutes of cranking and cycling the key. So July is coming up and I'd like to not have this problem again. I was thinking I would replace the relays, maybe the fuel pump relay has an intermittent problem and they are 18-19 years old, but in reading the other thread about the timing pickup, I hadn't considered that this also times the injectors. So new timing pickup too? Should I get aftermarket or OEM? Would my local HD dealer have it or be able to get it? I normally do a lot of troubleshooting and don't play "parts replacer", but for future reliability I am ok with replacing old electrical parts even if they are not the problem now. So relays and timing pickup - what else? What else might be causing it? Thanks, Scott |

The fuel injected timing pickup, also known as the cam position sensor, is different from the carbureted one. You will probably have to get it from the dealer. Mine failed intermittently for years until I went with a Drag Specialties part and put a carburetor on the bike. |

I've done a little bit of searching and my symptoms do not seem consistent with a bad CPS. Once started the bike runs flawless until a restart. To be clear, it cranks with no popping. I cycle the key and retry. I repeat until the bike starts. When it does start it is a perfectly normal start and runs perfectly immediately. It does not throw any codes. Suggestions or thoughts? |

One thing not over look is to check fuel pressure. Quick and easy to check and if it is not holding 50psi as you are waiting for the check engine light to go off and though out the cranking process you have your problem. This is just something to check on before throwing parts at it. |

Is the fuel pump priming? (3 second whine.) Have you pulled a spark plug to see if you're getting spark when this occurs? There is a relay or two in play as well that I believe control ignition. DAve |

I was under duress at the time and don't recall whether the pump was running. The next time all the bikes around me were running and I couldn't hear. I had them shut off and then (of course) I heard it and it started. I am thinking/hoping it is the relays, so those are definitely being replaced. It only happened once in my own driveway and it started after only 2 or 3 turns of the key, so I have not had an opportunity to troubleshoot, spark or fuel pressure. I will tell you when it gave me the most trouble if was 95+ and we had just finished getting to the hotel during summer traffic at Lake George NY. |

The CPS throws no codes and gets worse with heat. Have you examined it for burnt-electronics smell or oozing potting solution? |

I haven't, but will. Wouldn't it act up while running also? That is what I found doing a search. |

Let's say I just want to order a CPS - who has them? |

32400-94 is the HD part number. Parts dept can get you one at the local harley shop. Or you can order the drag specialties part # I listed on the other thread. It crosses to the HD part number. |

Thanks William, it wasn't 100% clear to me that the DS part was for FI and I didn't want to further hijack your thread |
