Yep. Another suspension question from THAT guy.

So, is it as simple as replacing the shock and forks and adding the beak? Longer kickstand as well and PRESTO! 10x the cool points?

I know. "That boy ain't right...."

You may even be able to trade with someone on here.

I've heard that the X has heavier/stronger wheels, than the XT, not sure about that..
Don't think I'd change it...

While that is true, in order to get as close as you can to a X, you will also need the tiny windshield, ditch the luggage, switch tires, add the headlight grill, chop the T off the decals, and modify the VIN plate (LAP is auctioning a VIN etching machine!)

Doing all that will deduct 27 cool points. : )

You need to swap front brake hoses as well.

Cool points? Froggy don't know...

All kidding aside, it doesn't seem too big of a project. The extra 't' won't bother me, and I ain't skurred of the lighter wheels (rode my 06X to the bottom of Copper Canyon and never encountered any rim-shattering situations). Plus, I kinda find the None More Black rims on a Buell to be as butch as it gets.

Are we all positive the forks are a direct swap? I thought the XT had 43mm vs 47mm on the X...

On my 09 X the forks are thicker. 50 something mm. When you google the specs you'll see they are different. I know the Ulysses has a heavier rim than the other XB but I'm not sure if the XT has the same rims as the X. That's a lot of work for a bike you can buy, then just sell yours.

The 08-up fork tubes are larger, but they're all the same size at the top where they're clamped in the triple trees.

The XTs use the same trees as the 06/07 X, so if you get 06/07 X forks, they have a perfect fit. The later forks will be more of an issue.

I don't know your riding ability but, in my humble opinion, they'll both pretty much be able to get to the same place. So why go through all the all trouble and expense ?

It's not an issue. The fork tubes for all X/XT's for all years have the same maximum diameter and all the trees have the same bores. At least a couple of people installed the "extended" 08-up X trees on earlier bikes to increase the turning lock and had no issues. This does significantly change the steering geometry, but they reported no issue with that either.

That is true Hugh as I have done it. However if you put 08 forks on 06 trees, or XT trees, it moves the front wheel closer with it's offset axle. I don't know if it would rub but with off road tires it might be close.???

Personally I would go with the 08 X trees as the increase in steering made a big difference to me even though the numbers are not that much different, the feel is.
