Rebuilding the forks on my 96 S1 Lightning. It appears to have 50x40x7 seals currently I can't find seals listed for anything but 98-99 S1, but Im unsure that they are the same. Does anyone know the Part Number I need? I called the HD Dealer, they said the seals on on backorder with no release date (of course) Was hoping to ride this for a week 2 weeks from now, and I've got the forks torn down already - ha. | ||

I did search, but this forum is a bit difficult to search, my apologies if this has been asked to death... Local shop can't find a listing for my 96' in their catalogues either. | ||

It should be mentioned, these are "WP" Forks as well, not sure if that changes things? | ||

I went through that last year, just ordered some seals off of eBay meant for a ktm(some used the same forks). They worked perfectly, just had to look through the listings to match up the size dimensions. I found a picture of the package I ordered but the picture on my phone is too big to upload. Send me a PM if you want me to send it to you. They were K&S brand, 50mm x 40mm x 7/10mm. Not sure what the deal is with the 7-10mm, but they fit. As far as the listings you found for 98-99 S1s, I swore I read on this forum that the 98 forks were different from the 96-97 forks. The last time it came up, and I mentioned that, people thought I was nuts, so the 98 bikes might use the same seals, they might not, I've heard both on this forum, and I've never had a 98 to compare to. Based on a "Parts Locator" search, there are several U.S. Dealers that have the Buell seals in inventory, including St. Paul. | ||

Whichever way you go, make sure you notice the oem parts are sold as individuals, so if you order from St. Paul, order two of each. | ||

Or another option for fork seals is to call racetech. Don't buy nos ktm seals that have been sitting for 22 years on a shelf. | ||

For long term maintenance, sealmate has a great tool to clean dirt from out of the seals. Usually all that is needed, for small seepage. Used to use a strip of 35mm film for this job. https://sealmate.net/ |
