I have a 2008 1125r with 7200 miles on it, last year at the end of riding season it locked up on me. There was a loud chatter coming from the engine before it happened and I was trying to get it home and that's when it locked up. Didn't have the time or money to have it looked at and after some research it could be timing chain tensioner but it also could be worse.. Then over the winter it froze up and the crank case cover on the right side of the bike cracked, I know it didn't happen last year cause I would have seen a crack like that and it didn't spit oil or fluids when it locked up. I'm struggling at finding a replacement crank case cover (not sure if that's even the name of the part) and not knowing the extent of the engine or tranny damage I have some options as of right now, I will dive into it soon and find out the extent of the damage just short for time and the weather is finally nice here in ND. 1. Sell bike as is and take a nasty hit 2. Part it out and get some money out of the deal 3. Find the parts and fix it, could be spendy depending on extent of damage. All opionions welcomed.

Option 2 is your best bet, followed by Option 1. Option 3 is not viable, considering the poor value of these bikes. |

Should have mentioned it sounds, and looks like, you need a motor - if the chain tensioner failed, there's a high likelihood you bent valves; the engine being subjected to frozen coolant also has a high likelihood of damage to the crankcase, and any parts subjected to the ice |

I feel for you man. But OMG, look at how freaking thin that case is? That can't be more than 1 mm. thick. For crying out loud, Rotax is Austrian, not Yugoslav. Hitting a large fly at speed would puncture part of the case. (Message edited by Desert_bird on May 04, 2017) |

Pulled the oil catch screen and I guess when she locked up she did some damage!!
Who wants it? Cheap parts bike or project! I have it posted in classifieds. |

same thing happened to mine in 2011 but at a track day on the back straight. almost lost it because of my own oil slick. I felt sorry for the guy behind me cuz he low sided and broke his clutch lever. http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290431/637739.html?1308169957 what happens is the nut backs off of the crank shaft and that's what splits the right side engine cover. there still should be enough good threads on the crank shaft that you could spin on a new nut with the proper loctite (red 271 vs 272)and the updated torque spec. of course you'd need a new engine cover, might be able to re-use the gasket if your gentle pulling it off. are those ferrous? might be the threads from the crank nut. you can pull the oil filter too and check for ferrous shavings there too. if they're not ferrous, it's probably just from the inside of the engine cover. unless you're emotionally attached to the bike, it'd be too much work and hassle to fix. part-out would take a while and get you as much $ or more compared to selling it whole.
