Sooo.. last time I ended up having some kind of knocking noise, I ended up parking the bike for a few months and finally got to it like 2 weeks ago. I peeked into the ignition cover and everything seemed OK in there, so I buttoned it back up before digging into the valves and such. Over the last two weeks I checked the valves (all in spec at 11,600, 2 on the tight side but in spec), changed plugs, re-purposed the harley harness connector to replace the melted one to the stock regulator, put a new Rick's r/r in there (I know, I know, but I figured it wouldn't be a problem with the drilled EBR rotor;now the voltage hangs around 14.4 instead of slowly going into the 12s) removed the solenoid, and swapped out the clutch slave cylinder for the EBR one. When I put it back together after the valves, the noise was gone, so I attributed it to the exhaust which I maybe got a better seal on when putting it back on. Anyway, a couple of days ago this started: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONHdk_eXtko It sounds like a combination of a bag of nuts in there, and something akin to a tea kettle about to boil. It seems to go away after it warms up and the fans come on, but I can still sorta feel it. When it's cold and making that horrendous noise, I noticed today that I can feel some reverberations from the sound if I keep my hand on the stator cover. Will try to pop it open again tomorrow and look inside, but until I can do that and check everything, I'm kinda depressed about the whole thing and was hoping someone could offer some insight. I've looked at videos that people posted when their rotor nut was loose, and it sounds nothing like this. The bike still rides totally fine, with no noticeable weirdness. Overall, I don't think I've ever had such an intense love/hate relationship with an object before. This bike is the most exhilarating fun I've ever had on two wheels (makes my Honda 919 seem like an old toaster) when it runs OK, but it seems that the moment I relax and begin to enjoy it, something like this starts and ruins it. |

When you looked under the ignition cover a large washer would have come off the gear at the top, did you retrieve and refit this? |

I watched/listened to your YouTube video. I'm not a bike mechanic, but it sounds like loose rotor nut or maybe cam chain tensioners not keeping enough tension. Let all of us know what you find out. |

I recently looked inside my stator to find the inner part of the rotor came unglued from the magnets, sounds like it could be that. The metal piece is really thin |

Well, I got to it today. Drained the oil and pulled the cover at my local Autozone (They're great for taking oil, letting you mess around in their lot, and having tools ready if needed). At first I didn't see anything wrong. The stator nut looked in place (of course, 32mm was the only socket they were out of, so I grabbed the 33mm and figured I'd at least yank it around by hand to see if it was REALLY loose; it wasn't). Anyway, the last thing I looked at were the 3 stator bolts and they were completely loose. The service manual says to put blue locktite on them but the threads looked totally clean. Ended up putting some on and tightening them and when I started it up the noise was gone. There was a bit of a metal rubbing noise for a bit, but that went away after like 30 seconds. I figured it just needed the fresh oil to spread. After that it sounded just fine. Of course, with this bike it never ends, so I got a call as soon as I pulled out asking to pick someone up 15 miles away and off I went. Halfway there I noticed the shifter being all slippery and slowed the hell down. Ended up having quite the oil drip. Probably messed up re-doing the stator wire gasket. Aand the saga continues. Re-did the ignition cover yesterday. Haven't tested it yet, but since I did it by my house, I brought the oil pan inside. I kinda thought that the oil looked a little "off" last time I drained it, and today, putting it into bottles for disposal, noticed gold flakes left all over the pan. Really tiny ones, but quite a lot of them. How bad is this? |

Just checked.. don't seem to be. Also, the left side plug mostly just had bit of grey muck on it. The oil did look rather glittery pouring out though. And it did the same the previous time, before the leak... The oil screen looked clean two weeks ago. And there was one very small piece of black plastic inside the ignition cover when I opened it up the other day. Aside from the sound caused by the loose stator, the bike seemed to be running just dandy. but... So wait a minute, all the glittery sparkles in that pic is from the oil? Yeeesh... That would make me feel uncomfortable. Did you take apart your oil filter? (I mean tear it apart with your fingers and inspect it) |

I'm new to the 1125, I've only had it 6 months. But I know the xb series uses a byzantine (brass color) oil gear drive. So, you may want to check your oil pump gear. |

I had a similar noise to yours not too long ago. My noise wasn't as bad as yours but similar. Turned out to be my rear cam chain tensioner. When the bike was cold it would make a rattling sound similar to yours, once the bike would warm up to operating temp the noise would go away. Changed out the cam chain tensioner and the noise went away. Not sure what to make of the flakes in your oil, but the rotor / sprag clutch does sound suspect to me. Good luck with the repair. Don't give up on your CR!! |
