I'd like to know if anyone has some tips on installing the exhaust gaskets and headers on the XB12 engines? After my last ride I noticed a strange exhaust sound and found the header was loose. I finished rotating the engine down today and found that the front muffler strap had broken and the rear head was missing one exhaust stud and the nut off of the other. Don't know which one is the chicken and which one is the egg. The stud came out of a hole that I had to put a helicoil in like 15k miles ago. I check them from time to time, don't know why it came loose now. At any rate, I remember it being a real pain to get the new gaskets in the heads and to get the header to sit right in the gaskets. I always buy an extra gasket cause I usually ruin one trying to get it in the bore. Does anyone have some helpful tips to accomplish these tasks? |

I cleaned the edge from exhaust port extra good and put a little bit of copper grease into it. after that used a small radius wooden handle of a hammer and pressed the gaskets in going around the port radius. There is a tool to press the gasket into the exhaust port. http://www.bikernet.com/pages/BIKERNET_TOOL_OF_THE _YEAR_2011_SO_FAR.aspx |
