The Buell tank bags use standard types of fasteners and the webbing is widely available. You can find compatible parts at some craft stores and also at some outdoor sporting goods stores. It is not difficult to make your own straps. | ||

The problem with them sitting around they too would be ten years old! I have seen some cheap back packs that could be bought to be donors. | ||

I'm in the same boat. The zipper on my tank bag went bad about a year ago and in the last 3 weeks or so one of the two rear straps finally wore through. It's pretty sad looking. Does anyone know if there is another brand of tank bag that would use the same mounts as the Buell branded one? | ||

My local hardware store sells a full complement of straps and buckles . . . in addition, on a number of occasions, I've taken tank bags, backpacks and luggage to the shoe shop to have new, and more robust, zippers installed. There are solutions. | ||

Walmart also sells generic webbing and straps in the camping section. Only one size, about an inch, but about 4 feet of strap and decent snap connector (male and female). I've used them to good effect several times for different purposes. Something like $1.69 per set of connectors and strap. | ||

I don't know you feel about keeping your tank nice or free of mods, but I took a different approach. Bought a set of rivet-on stainless snaps from the local hardware store for less than $10. Riveted snaps onto the top cover and the flaps of my tank bag. Took about 20mins and worked great. Gives you a much greater choice in tank bags. Why not just use Velcro, then if you change your mind or bag all you have to do is remove any adhesive left behind after pealing off the Velcro. | ||

I thought of Velcro, but decided against. Wasn't willing to trust my phone/charger/maps/earphones/stuff to the adhesive holding the velcro. In general, every time I've used adhesive backed Velcro, the Velcro was stronger than the adhesive and it pulled off. The curvature and lack of surface area on the "tank" cover also seemed insufficient. Jason | ||

I've gotten away from the buell tank bag as to way I've got rox risers and bars positioned I had an issue or issues with bag. It had a liking for my starter switch. On a ride with some folks who changed their mind on which road to go on. Made a sharp uturn to right and heard a godawful noise from motor. Took a second to realize starter motor was engaged while motor still running. Ooops. Bag was just too tall the way I like for my bars to be positioned. | ||

Hugie, It came with the bike. Also came with a special backpack which attaches to the triple-tail backrest. It has been handy for keeping a cig lighter USB adaptor and phone cable and a couple other doo-dads. Sagehawk, The bars turn lock-to-lock without the controls coming near the bag. It is pretty small bag though. I bought it years ago as it was the only one small enough to fit on my panhead between the instrument cluster and the seat.  I sure wish the bars would turn further . . . been caught trying to turn tighter at low speeds and found the limit earlier than expected many times! Jason | ||

Jason: The only two times Uellymae has been on ground was at parking lot crawling speed and gravity ruled the day. wont say anything bout the bitch in explorer that cut in front of me. LOL anyhow, I've got 2" rox risers and the way all roll back to me is what I like. but buell tank bag was a bit tall. I've got buell set up like my 83 husky 250 i had. I sit in a forward position with bars postitioned back sitting up high. husky was really ridden with throttle and rear brake to be aggressive. Got a 06 seat on my 07. | ||

Portero, I bought the KLR650 strap kit which came with 4 straps. 2 straps have plastic tabs that mount very conveniently to the two forward airbox screws. I have the Fastex buckles pulled right up to the attachment points which positions them perfectly for the front buckles on my Wolfman Rainer bag. I girth-hitch the rear straps to the sub=frame rails under the seat, directly at the base of the airbox cover. When riding without the tank bag, I keep the buckles cinched up tight in the gap between the seat and airbox. When I use the bag, I loosen these straps to reach the rear buckles on the Wolfman. It's a bit tricky vetting the seat on with these straps attached, but with a little juggling of seat and straps, it can be done. Here are a few pics (sorry, no bag. Portero, That I don't know. The Wolfman has a female Fastex buckle at each corner of the bag, so the the way I have the male ends placed cinches the bag down perfectly. I have no idea how the Buell bad connects. |
