Messing around last night and broke a bike off in the lower triple tree whilst removing the front fender. I'm going to the store for some easy outs, just starting the hunt in case the bolt removal goes foul.  I've not got internet at home only a phone with limited data so research is difficult at times. You better not using a easy out for such small bolts. Use a center punch and drill it out on low speed. Start with a small drill. A left hand drill could be helpful with trying to unscrew it at the end. | ||

I'm fairly confident you won't need another triple tree clamp. You have good access to the broken bolt, and the role of the bold isn't very demanding. If it were me... 1) Make sure it won't just spin out by hand. Once the clamping load is gone, sometimes they are trivial to remove. 2) Try one of the "screw removers" that dig into the top of the sheared shaft. 3) Take a tungsten carbide dremel bit and carefully dig a new "center" divot into that bolt. Take time try and really make is perfect. The eye is good ad making a circle in the middle of a circle (the reason ghost ring gun sights work so well). 4) Drill it out, preferably with left handed drill bits, until it is a hollow shell and it just spins out. 5) If that goes wrong, and you have to drill to where you damage the triple tree threads, no big deal, just use a helicoil. I wouldn't use an easy out. (When you do, and they break, you will need that tungsten carbide bit to get it out and it will take a while.) I would be tempted to weld a bolt to it and take it out that way, but I would chcicken out for fear of killing my ecm. | ||

Thanks for the tips, I'll grab some left hand drill bits today while I'm out. I'm pretty sure I've done that some years ago but it's been a while and need smaller bits this time. It is a light use fastener only holding the fender, and headlight housing in turn. I'm probably thinking worst case and this should be easy, just freaking out a little. My bigger task is tracking down a gremlin in my instrument cluster/headlight assembly but that's another subject.... | ||

Hooray, I pulled it off with the left handed bits. Couldn't get all of the old threads and lock-tite out of the hole but chased the threads and almost as good as new. I'm slowly combing over this beast trying to her her up and going as strong as my current daily drive my Concours 1000. Thanks much y'all, looks like I jumped the gun... |
