So, when a stator goes out, do they slowly give up the ghost, or do they typically crap out all at once. I have one of those Kuryakyn voltage meters and for most of the life of my Uly, form idle on up I would always have two solid green LED's showing a solid 13+ volts going to the battery. Only when I would run both heated grips and auxiliary lighting would it drop to one green LED, which indicated about 11 volts going to the battery. However, over time, it has required less of a dray to show such a significant drop in charge. Now if I run either the spot lights or the heated grips, even at driving speeds, only one green light, and at idle, even that can start flickering. Also, now even at idle with no accessories running, the meter often drops to a single green light. I have cleaned all easily accessible connections, and I just installed a new, fully charged, Shorai Lith.Ion battery. With the new battery, it does take a little more to get the meter to drop to a single green, but in the past, it always showed a good strong 13.5 volt charge, even under the load of accessories. Mine did that. It was the regulator. Just got weak but didn't die all the way. |

Hmm. Well, my regulator is only a year old, so I hope it's something else. |

Any thoughts? I don't like Shorai. (you asked) Seriously, Keep monitoring it. I would worry when the green stops happening. I use a single LED GammaTronix monitor. On mine, green is good. |

They sometimes do slowly fail, other times they go out instantly, but that usually is because you lacked a tool to notice it failing. You can test the stator, the details are in the electrical manual, you basically take the stator output plug, and using a multimeter read the AC voltage reading at idle and at 4000rpm. There is also a continuity test you can do |

If the regulator is new-ish, I would suggest carefully looking over the wiring around that area. Also, while you're down there so to speak, you should put a meter to the stator and see what it's doing and verify it's not shorted to ground too. |

You could also be losing your battery...less "storage" in the battery means all your farkles are pulling directly from the stator, not from the battery/"reserve tank of electricity". |

Are your heated grips factory or aftermarket? What kind of current is your add on lighting rated for? I'm pretty sure, going by memory, that the charging system is rated for 30 amp output. Up to that point you should have full output available, meaning there should still be over 14 vdc coming out of the regulator. Oh yeah, where are you getting the power for the add ons? Right from the battery or somewhere downstream? At any rate, you need to isolate the problem and not guess. Could still be line loss somewhere, regulator, stator or battery. Take a multimeter and get some real readings before condemning anything. |
