I've had a 10/22 for many years. It's the sporter model with no barrel band. I put a Williams on it too but left the trigger alone. I found that if you put the safety on and pull the trigger it won't fire but takes all the creep out of the trigger. Release the safety and you have a hair trigger. Perfect for target shooting.

I've had (until my fishing trip) one of the 92S's for years; best shooter evah. I had a former Beretta gunsmith do a polish job on the works, and installed a set of Bomar sights. Pachmayr grips to fit my big hands. I wish I had a picture to share...

Where did you get the 22lr AR upper/lower/etc?

What are the barrel lengths on yours and your sons?

I found an M&P 15-22 upper/lower online... they're both polymer. Is yours polymer or aluminum?

The gun is mostly a factory 15-22 with a Tacticool22 barrel nut adapter. The front sight base came from the same. The optic is a Simmons 1x20 red dot. Handguards Magpul. Ergo grip.

Mine's a 16." His is an 18."

It's a polymer upper/lower. The only downside is the use of proprietary bolt assembly/barrel.

"Non scary"? These are the modern multi-purpose rifle. Only the libruls are scared of those.

The mag in it is fifteen. He also has some tens and a twenty-five.

Rick, Talk him into watching the target through the sights instead of raising his head after the shot. You may have to spot and call where they hit to get him used to it. I put my son on the spotting scope and had him call my hits to get him used to it. I do the same thing in archery.

Hey, it took me years to learn to keep both eyes open, and I'm still lousy at it.

Thinking about an AR build, if the legal part gets changed. Pretty simple. Ace skeleton stock, SIDE charging handle, 16+ inch barrel, 1 in 8 twist, Wylde chamber, Mid length gas system, Railed gas block, & free float front tube with top rail and the ability to add small sections up front at bottom & sides.

I like an uncluttered fore end that doesn't catch on brush. Full 4 side rails tends to be bulky, grabby, and sharp, and when you add silicon rail covers, heavy.

Being able to add a bipod or flashlight/vertical grip is desirable too. So Keymod, etc. are fine.

I welcome opinion on Fore End Choice!!

That's if the insanity laws get changed in the Imperial State.

Otherwise, I may build a bolt action version. Simply omit the gas tube and make it a manually operated rifle.

Which gets to my BIG question.

I hate the stock AR charging handle.

It's not Eugene Stoner's original design. That was a trigger shaped handle inside the carry handle. ( That's not any good either on a railed upper. )

I don't know what committee designed the current system. I mock them or him.

Making a slot to direct hot gas into your eyes is stupid. It's complex, since they needed to add a forward assist. It's awkward to use with a scope and you have to break cheek weld to clear a malfunction. In many ways it's a throwback to muzzle loaders where the troops get killed standing up and reloading their rifles, slowly. ( slower than the enemy, too, both then and now )

I fully understand the undesirability of a reciprocating handle. So...

Among the current offerings, what looks like the best available uppers & bolt systems that "fix the Problem"????

And of course, make a manually operated AR variant functional?

Thank you for your thoughts.

A quick look at Midway USA...

Looks nice. Prefer a better handle, left side, non reciprocating, but a good package.

Hey, it took me years to learn to keep both eyes open, and I'm still lousy at it.

I do for pistol unless it's a long, slow shot (25m). For rifle it depends on the optic. Big-diameter optics with no magnification are fine but not for mag. The army has spoiled me; I really love the ELCAN on my service gun, but $2500 is too much for my personal long gun.

The right-side charging handle is really my only gripe about Ruger's 10-22. I've been looking at Tandem Kross's ambi charging handle, just don't have money to splurge on gun stuff right now.

Thanks.

Is alright.

Not bad for a cheap project (though $400 in tax stamps really hurt).

I've got a 4" handguard and 2.5" muzzle device inbound for use with an extension tube-less pistol lower. That should be kinda kewl, too.

Some spring tuning may be necessary to make it work.

As it is the suppressed upper will not cycle standard velocity ammo.

Nate, I would guess with it being .22LR that it operates a lot like a Ruger 10/22 with no lock up of the bolt.

Torque, it depends a lot on dominance of eye, if you can "turn off" the open eye with a scope.

I can use both eyes with a red dot and a low power scout scope. ( long eye relief, forward mounted ) Higher power scopes I'm still working on. The ideal is the brain combines images & you superimpose the dot/cross hair with both eyes. Practice & human variation. Some can some can't and most need to train to do so.

I trained originally to shoot pistol duelist style. One hand, body turned to minimize target. Now I use the Modern Method developed by Weaver, Cooper, etc. Much more accurate & faster.

.......

After some research it seems American Spirit Arms invented the non reciprocating left side charging handle for ARs. ( others, decades ago invented the non reciprocating handle )

Looks like my choices are a folding low profile or bigger non folding one. I'm inclined to a lower parts count... simple is better.

I hope I'm using the loophole correctly. With no gas tube an AR clone is not semi automatic. Permanently blocking the gas tap/ sight base should make it not quickly field change-able. Anyone know the precise language of the unconstitutional NY law?

Liberty in the process of being re-asserted/defended by the ATF? Check it out patriots! Have you seen this January 20th 2017 "white paper" from Ronald Turk, the Associate Deputy Director (Chief Operating Officer) of the ATF?:

Options to Reduce or Modify Firearms Regulations

If they end up heeding his recommendations, liberty will be well-served.

Removal of "silencers" (sound suppressors) from the NFA!

Would have been nice if he had recommended scrapping the entire "hunting sporting arms" exceptions framework and all AP regs. That would eliminate a huge area of confusion.

Here's my take on his entire list of 16 "Points for Discussion":

1. New Federal Firearms Licensees (FFL) Dealing Exclusively at Gun Shows (or internet):

Yes, freedom!

2. Armor Piercing Ammunition:

Okay, but instead totally clean up this arguably unconstitutional regulatory framework in its entirely; re-affirm the military and defensive arms basis of the 2nd amendment, and in keeping with that affirmation eliminate all regs on AP ammo, and thus eliminate all the confusing special "hunting and sporting" AP Ammo exemptions.

In addition to noting the issue concerning green tip M855 5.56x45mm, which is technically/legally not even AP ammo according to the ATF's own definition of AP ammo, also note the issue with the import ban on Russian-made 7n6 5.45×39mm ammo (for AKM-74 firearms) and it's ludicrously unconstitutional reasoning.

Note that criminals don't follow laws. The AP regs only affect law abiding people while generating great confusion in the market/industry.

3. Re-importation of Certain Department of Defense Surplus Firearms from Foreign Countries:

Yes! A massive FU to Obama and his petty, vindictive ban against re-importation of vintage military firearms like the venerable M1 Garand rifles and M1911 pistols, and surplus ammo too! South Korea alone has hundreds of thousands of M1 Garands sitting waiting for re-importation and sale to American vintage firearm collectors. This one is worth quoting in full. Thank you Mr. Turk!

The State Department and ATF have worked over the past several years with the Administration on requests for the importation of U.S. origin military firearms, ammunition, and parts that were once sent overseas to support allies. There are surplus rifles, pistols, ammunition, and other importable U.S. origin Curio and Relic (C&R) defense articles (including M1 Garand and Carbine rifles) and pistols (M1911) overseas awaiting importation authority. There is no clear public safety reason why taxpayer-funded US-origin C&R defense articles should be denied re-importation to the American public, while many non-U.S.- origin C&R items are approved. Additionally, these items do not represent any discernable public safety concern, as demand lies with collectors of vintage military firearms. Importation and sale through licensed dealers would effectively regulate the lawful transfer of these firearms through a licensee and a background check. Joint effort from the Administration, State Department, and ATF could easily reverse past decisions and allow for the safe and legal importation and sale of these historical and collectible items. Many M1 Garand rifles have been approved for importation in the past, setting precedence for this to occur. The more recent denials were in part due to perceived potential that they may be used in crimes, for which there is little, if any, evidence for such a concern.

If that's not a bold and righteously valiant FU to Obama, Holder, HRC, Kerry & cohorts, what is? Awesome! Thank you sir!

to be continued...

The entirety of the NFA did us all dirty.

I don't want or need an M1 anything, but feel it's ridiculous to not allow reimportation.

Most of the importation regs on foreign arms are arbitrary and nonsensical. The only purpose has been to keep out cheap guns and make "non sporting" arms more expensive.

I'd like to see the machine registry re-opened (repeal the Hughes Amendment).
