Just picked up my 08 XB12R, runs great, starts right up idles fine hits over 100 in a flash, may be a touch lean, a little 3.8k flat spot.
My complaint is the popping when you roll back the throttle. Fairly loud, for sure annoying. The bike has a factory race can on it, dual outlets, known ,I hear, as a PRO can. |

I can get with that, my 09 BMW GS does the same thing, I have come to embrace it.
I just want to make sure nothing is going on I need to address. I have noticed that the rear cylinder is running leaner , by a shade, than the front and I get a sneezing from the air box during warm up. Maybe intake seals, going to spray test those today |

Ok, another approach. Is there a system that may have characteristics more suited to an older rider, that is, low throated sound on acceleration (short of being loud) , light weight, less likely to pop on deceleration .
Am I asking too much? Performance is not a real big issue for me, this bike is , oh, about twice what I can handle so if I were to lose some power I would never notice.
Right now I am earplugged 100% of the time. |

Look into "Drummer" mufflers. They're modified stock exhausts. Low and throaty, not loud and poppy.

I actually heard a Drummer on an 05, really nice sound, not too loud but with some authority.
I am going to call them tomorrow and see if they will mod my factory PRO system.
In the meantime ..tonight I fitted a set of shop made db killers, easy to do using a 6" piece of 1" schedule 80 pvc pipe (od of approx 35mm) slid one in each of the dual outlets and went for a rip down the block. Complete change! Knocked the rough sound of the Pro pipe right down to a deep yet pleasant sound and seemed to cure the decell pop almost completely. I couldn't really test it very long, they would melt, so I have a set coming in the next couple of days, eBay $8 each.
I will update as soon as I get a good test on them. |

My new Drummer SS is on its way to me and should be here tomorrow afternoon.
I need to move the engine a bit to change the rear upper rocker cover gasket so I may wait to install it but then again my rocker box is leaking so very little I may drive it for a while yet.
Cant wait to hear how this sounds and see where the power band ended up |

An update: I received my Drummer SS and installed it and ran the bike for a couple of weeks, not bad, a world of change from the old system but still not right , rough start and warm up, still " sneezing " during warm up, loud popping on decel as well as a dead spot during acceleration between 3000-3600 rpm.
I had the bike torn down for new rocker box gaskets ( up and down, front and rear) and during that time I sent my ECM to IDS for a remap. Huge difference ! Runs perfectly at all times, zero popping on decel, no flat spots, really a joy to drive. Drummer sounds really good, I couldn't be more pleased. |
