Early S1 top triple clamps did not have the lower handlebar mount features incorporated into the forged triple clamp. The lower handlebar clamps were separate bolt on pieces (likely castings). There were large bores in the top triple clamp for a rubber bushing to come up from the bottom, essentially rubber mounting the handlebars. Once the lower handlebar clamp was integrated into the top triple clamp, the design never reverted to the rubber mounted style.

I honestly don't recall when the lower handlebar clamp feature was incorporated into the top triple forging, but the rubber mounted top triple clamps are somewhat rare - so it was likely sometime still within the '96 model year...

I'm surprised that an S1 parts book (I'm in Wisconsin on vacation, away from my parts books...) wouldn't mention the rubber mounted design...

Hmmm...

Maybe it was only the S1 prototypes that had the rubber mounting?

Same as Ken. My '96 has separate handle bar clamps - but they're solid mounted, no rubber.

It's going to hard as all get out to find that style top clamp since it was used for such a short time.
