Ok, took the oil strainer off today, for the first time. The bike has 46,000 on it and I didn't know it was there. Oops. Anyways, I found a bunch of chunks of what looks like plastic in the sump. Anyone know what this might have come from? Nothing sticks to a magnet, so i know they aren't metal. I can't seem to get a pic small enough for the site to accept, I can send you a pic directly if you wanna see them. |

Well, after posting I found a different thread referencing the cam chain guides. So I pulled the engine and opened the alternator side. Found even larger chunks in the oil galleys. The fwd side guide is gone. Nothing left. The aluminum case behind it is erroded REALLY BAD, about 3/8 deep. Has anyone had this damage? What did you do to fix/negate the missing metal? |

Aero, JB Weld for filler? If that isn't your cup of tea, then find an excellent AL welder in your area. Obviously need excellent, otherwise warping may occur

This thread has got my attention. My 1125R (A Jan09 UK bike with 10k on it) has from time to time made what can only be described as a really bad chain rail noise lasting only 2-3 seconds when in the warm up cycle (But not immediately on starting from cold??). Once its had its little rattle you hear no more from it. Last week when i ran it up to temp, it made the noise twice before it was at temp. Theres no way of telling if this noise happens when the engine is under heavy load, as i have a pipe on it. I thought the engine had a bit of a scratchy sound but reading that others have the same sound from their motors, i just stopped worrying, and listening to it. Also, I don't want to get paranoid on it as there's enough to concentrate on when at speed without thinking on the possibility that the cam gears might trip over the timing chain. So, is it that all these motors make that kind of noise? I didn't see any posts saying that their motor was free of this noise. Did your motor have this scratchy noise during normal running? and did you hear any other serious rattles as described? I had little to speak of on the oil screen yet. After reading this, and as i am needing a valve shim service, I will deffo get this noise checked out to see if this is happening to mine Good luck mate |

There are previous threads on this subject, but in summary, there were inferior cam chain guides used on earlier engine versions and a factory recall (I think) was issued. In any case, the newer guides last longer, but they are wear out and should be inspected for wear from time to time, along with the chains. 46k miles after all is an exceptionally long engine life for this engine. |

I've seen a couple threads about the cam guide chunks in the strainer. There was a recall on the cam chain guide. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/418840.html?1229032265 |

Aeromech I'd be interested to see the area that has been eroded behind the fwd chain rail, so that i can get an idea of whats need if i attempt to replace mine. If i had to say which side the noise came from on mine, I'd say it was the clutch side and to the rear. But because the noise is gone in a flash I haven't managed to pin-point it. I suppose thats a good thing, because if it was continual the motor would more then likely be doomed. Any further progress? Regards FS. Thanks for the link and thoughts |
