Man . . .these bring back a lot of memories . . . I was at nearly each and every one of those events. I remember when the idea came up to have Fran Crane (Reg's idea) ride the Iron Butt. Topeka Harley-Davidson set the bike up and I spent 10 days racing all over the country in a Ford pickup playing "just in case". The event was, in many ways, a huge success . . . but in most an unmitigated disaster. I was dealing with a Fran who was disoriented, from lack of sleep, and wandering around unable to say who or where she was. Then picked up David Hayworth at an airport and drove to Niagra Falls to intercept at 2am and back to NYC. Got to NYC just in time for the infamous grenaded motor. We stole a motor from a dealer in MO, who drove it to Arkansas, and we had it changed in no time. That set off a pissing match, with HD brass, that went for months and I ended up having top buy the bike the motor came from. Fran was nothing short of amazing . . . .in so many ways. She was the consummate long distance riding legend. I still cherish the 8 hours her and I spent in a truck driving from Topeka to East Troy to meet the Buell staff. During that ride she explained to me her history and background and "why" she rode. I attended the awards banquet with her and she had, rightfully, the respect of the entire distance riding community. The SIGNATURE SERIES and RAINBOW PAINT stories are even better. Fun factoid . . . one of our long time Badwebbers was at a junk sale one day and finds . . . guess what. . . all the correspondence, drafts, paperwork, purchase orders and samples from the advertising company that was hired to do the Signature Series program. For something like $5 he bought the entire "history of the Signature Series Program". RAINBOW PAINT . . .which I got drug into . . . . was very cool but we should have run it better. Great memories. |

^ Sold, thanks Court! I remember Fran's ordeal - you kept me in the loop as she circuited the country, and then, at the Yakima, Washington Iron Butt stop, you asked if I could discreetly plug in with her and see if I could help in any way. A small group of us PAC/BOG'ers rode over from western WA and met her in Yakima. Her S3 was doing fine at this point, and we gave her all the moral support we could. She was exhausted (probably over 8k miles in at this point), but managed a smile for my camera: Do you remember that she was one of our featured guests at Blue Groove/Northwest in '97? She rode all night from Santa Cruz up to Portland like it was no big deal, and true to form she was the first BG/NW participant to show up the morning of the Adventure Ride with Erik. ...she had, rightfully, the respect of the entire distance riding community. I had a nice e-mail conversation awhile back with Michael Kneebone regarding Fran. Indeed, she was, and still is, greatly respected...and tremendously missed. |

#9: "BattleTrax - Sponsored by Buell and Battle 2win" trophies/plaques - these may not be worth anything to anyone but me, but I'll toss 'em out here just in case: ^ From the first-ever BattleTrax. ^ After blowing a rear head gasket on the BLURR the day before while leading an adventure ride out to Cave Creek, and then spending most of the night in the back of Woz's infamous "Bread Truck" repairing the damage. Grabbing both of these trophies at ABW - running on virtually no food or sleep, and against a large field of competitors - was particularly satisfying. These two should probably go, if they go, as a set. One of these plaques (not sure which one yet) is already spoken for; if you're interested in one (or all but one) for your collection, shoot me a PM with an offer I can't refuse. Ferris |

>>>>Indeed, she was, and still is, greatly respected...and tremendously missed. Fran did things on a motorcycle . . . things like the fastest NYC-SF time (in the days long before these 185mph rockets) and the shortest time (with Michael Kneebone) to hit all 48 contiguous states. Both of those efforts involved planning, perhaps easy today, that was incredible. Part of the NYC to San Fran "science" (which required checking out from a NYC Police Station and checking in at a Police Station in San Fran) required leaving at PRECISELY the right minute to hit the proper traffic situations in the various "can't be avoided" cities along the way. Kneebone, apparently while working for the City of Chicago, did an elaborate algorithm to hit the 48. Whatever he did, he and Frannie followed i and it worked. She is a Legend in the world of motorcycles. |

^ Amen. ----------------------------------- #10: BRAG California Touring Adventure Plaque I was asked in very early 2002 by BRAG's Leslie Prevish to plan out day three of the BRAG California Touring Adventure, i.e. from Bakersfield, CA to Fresno, CA, but specifically through the Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. Glad to help! And then the day before day three of the ride a massive winter storm blew through and wreaked havoc on all my arduous planning. Due to snow and freezing temperatures we had to abandon some legs altogether and "improvise" our way through the parks. The day turned out to be epic in the end, however, a truly grand adventure with some truly fine people. Although I couldn't participate in the rest of the ride, by all accounts the entire deal was unforgettable. This plaque was a gift from Leslie. It's laser etched, with an enameled pin inlaid into the face: Here are links to a couple of threads posted-up here on BadWeB chronicling the ride: "Pre-ride" festivities: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/681 7/13231.html?1025450580 BRAG California Touring Adventure: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/681 7/10946.html?1032476598 Now then: Does anybody want this? Make me an offer I can't refuse. FB (Message edited by jerry_haughton on December 15, 2016) |

Too funny . . . . gads . . . I had forgotten this thread and, when I saw it . . it was like it was yesterday. . . . even 14 years ago. I still laugh over THIS POST. Trust me . . . there was NO need to "break in" that bike. :-) |
