Does the ECU box need removing to get the battery out, please? |

Not on my 2008. |

No. It's a tight fit, but you should be able to wiggle the battery out once the leads are disconnected and the rubber retaining strap is off. |

Thanks, fellas. Is the strap hard to put back on? |

^ You may end up swearing excessively, but it's not that hard to get back on. |

I'm pretty sure that French kissing a cobra is easier than putting that strap on |

I've read it's hard work. There's a Youtube showing a bloke trying to put the strap back on an XB Lightning. |

Putting the strap is a trick. One way is nearly impossible, the other almost do-able with bare hands. Notice the metal end in not symmetrical? |

It is easily taken off and put back on unless you have Andre the giant hands. Compared to most everything else that every now and then needs fixing it is a nonevent. |

Thanks again. Is the standard battery a gel one? |

Hi everybody: Buell long gone but not forgotten. Had to jump in on this one. I would hook one end and stretch all but a couple of inches of rubber with one hand flexing across the curve of the battery. With my free hand i pinched the other end with a pair of those long needle nose with the 90 degree bend down hard and easily placed the free end over the metal hook. The trick was to have the last bit below where I pinched the rubber relaxed so it easily fit over the metal tab. Also never removed the ecu for battery changes. |

That's the trick, long angled needle nose pliers. |

OEM Battery is an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat). |

The strap was easy on the Uly. Now the Lightning is a different story. I replaced the rubber part on mine with velcro. |

It was the Lightning video I watched. Happy to hear the Uly's is easier. |

It was always easy for me to disconnect the metal loop and the part towards the front wheel. I take the metal loop off first and the rubber on the hook in the back last. I reverse the order for reinstalling. It is easy to do with one hand. Maybe mine is too loose or is different on the 2008. |
